Hey, Coventry University Student Ambassador here! 👋

I'm assuming you're new to Coventry University? There are many ways to get involved with other students, one being Freshers Week, which starts in September 🎉. It's a great way to break the ice with others in a more relaxed and social environment at the start of your year. Other than that, you can look into societies! I'm part of the Women in Engineering Society and met an amazing bunch of people outside of my course. There are other societies like the Music Society, Arts, Film, and a plethora of cultural ones that may resonate with you personally! I highly recommend it 😊

Hi MarieM,

Just remember you're all in the same boat at uni, and pretty much everyone isopen to making friends. I wouldn't put too much pressure on yourself to find your people rightaway, and don't be disheartened if you don't. I wasn't very good friends with my flatmates, but after first term I'd formed really strong friendships with my course mates and others I'd met through societies/just at uni.

It's important to be open and approachable. Join clubs or societies that interest you, attend social events, and don't be afraid to strike up conversations with people in your classes or accommodation!

Also, give yourself time to adjust. Moving to a new place and starting university is a big change, and it’s okay if it takes a little while to find your footing. Be patient with yourself and others. Sometimes the best friendships form when you least expect it.

Bottom line, my advice is to be friendly and chatty when you feel comfortable and you'll findyour people!

All the best,
Sophie, University of Exeter student ambassador

Hiya @MarrieM !

I am Martina, a first year vet student at the University of Central Lancashire!
I am originally from Italy and been living in the UK for over 4 years!

Making friends, as an international student, can be exciting and challenging at the same time! To connect with other like-minded people you could start by joining Clubs and Societies so you could find people with similar hobbies. Also, make sure you attend Orientation Events and International Student Events, where there are usually lots of chances to meet others who are also new to the country/area.
You could also join University groups on Social Media Platforms like Facebook and perhaps start connecting with people in your course!
Remember, everyone is in the same boat and looking to make friends, so don’t be afraid to take the first step.
Good luck 🍀

Hi @MarrieM ,

Try not to worry too much about making friends at Uni- remember that nobody knows each other and everyone is there to make friends so will want to socialise and make friends!

A good way of making friends before you arrive at university is to join some group chats. There are usually group chats on Facebook that lots of people join before they start university. Search for groups for your university and then within this there may be groups for the halls that you are living in and also for your course. People start to talk in these before they start university so this is a good way of meeting some people and getting to know who you might be living with or who is on your course which can be nice to know before you go to uni.

In freshers week, I would suggest trying to spend time with your new flatmates and trying to spend time in the kitchen with them. This is the time that everyone wants to make friends and making friends with your flatmates is a good idea, so try and spend time with them and ask them to do things with you. You could ask them to go t some of the freshers events with you, or go on a night out, or just ask them if they want to do something in the flat like a games night! It's great doing this in freshers week so try and do some things like this.

I would also suggest going to the freshers week events. If your course puts on any welcome week events, make sure you go to these as this is where you will meet the people who are on your course. My course put on a welcome event for everyone to get to know each other which is where I met some of my closest friends on my course so I would definitely recommend going to these if you have any.

Joining a society is also a great way of making friends. Go to the freshers fair and see if there are any that interest you and if there are then sign up for trial sessions to see if there are any that you really enjoy. If there are, then join them! They are great for meeting lots of new people with a similar interest to you and the socials are great fun too.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador
