How to Save at University

Living in a new town and managing your living costs for the first time can be a little daunting. So, I thought I would share some useful apps, tools and tips to help you make your budget go further.

16-25 Railcard: For £30 a year you get 1/3 of rail fares. This has saved me so much money since being at university. Not only do I use it when travelling back home, but with living in Kingston the easiest way to get into central London is by train.

Student Oyster: Similar to the Railcard, with the student Oyster you get discounted (usually 30% off) pay as you go fares on the bus, tube, train and TFL. It is £25 to get the card so is great if you are only planning on travelling around London. You can also connect it to your Railcard.

National Art pass/Art Fund: If you are like me and enjoy going to exhibitions this is a great card to have as you get 50% off most exhibitions and usually discount in the gift shops. For an under 30 pass it is currently £36/48 a year, depending on the payment plan you choose. There is always so many new exhibitions in London, which makes it worth while.

To Good To Go: This is an app that I recently found out about, which lets you know which restaurants and stores near you have left overs/unsold food usually towards the end of the day that you can purchase for a discounted price.

Lidl Plus/Nectar/Tesco Clubcard/Loyalty cards: These are great to have as they are usually free and you will probably use them regularly. There is a Lidl in Kingston, so if you decide to do your weekly shop there, this could get you a few free pastries. There are multiple Sainsburys in Kingston so Nectar is a good option, as you will definitely be popping in.

Student discount apps: There are many apps like UNiDAYS, Student Beans and Totum which are a nice perk to take advantage of while being a student. Although these apps are all very similar and there are more out there just like them, I personally have all three just to make sure I don’t miss out on any potential discounts.

Local student discount: As Kingston is a student town there are often lots of places that offer discounts. I sometimes go to this Japanese restaurant called Pokie & Roll and there is a pub called The Mill which offers discounts on drinks and also has a popular student night with more discounts. So, make sure to ask wherever you go as you never know they may have an offer.

Ordering off the children’s menu: So far, I have only done this at Wagamama’s but it was great! Very similar food for way cheaper.

I hope this helps and please share anymore tips you may have
