The Student Room Group

3 year residency rule

Born in the UK and lived there till the end of primary school. I am a British citizen. Moved to my home country (outside of the EU/EEA/Turkey), and have only visited once pre-pandemic, then COVID hit then hyperinflation in my home country meant I couldn't even go on holiday abroad.Furthermore there are other reasons that help my case but i am not fully sure as i havent found much information online:
My parents who are both British citizens have even attempted to find job there and relocate but the job market is not the best in the UK and have had no luck despite my parents being educated experienced etc. Furthermore I have attempted to enroll to a sixth form half way through my a levels but I have been informed I am low priority across several schools due to my overseas residence and vacancies were competitive and low in number.
Enrolling in uni for the Sep 2025 intake and still living in my home country, although I will be taking a gap year from September 2024, I cannot qualify for a student loan or even home fee status without the loan, although I heard it is a case by case basis. How unlucky am I in terms of getting home fee status?
TIA
Just noting that uni's determine your fee status, not SFE, (who just assess your funding).

For residency, they'd usually be looking for evidence of permanent links to the UK, which from what you've posted, you don't have.

Hi there,

It's up to your university regarding home fees, you would need to discuss this with them. Regarding residency you would need to show links to the UK. Applications for 2025 won't open till next year so you would be best to apply when they open and then send your residency evidence for the team to review.

Thanks,
Claire
