How hard is it to get into LSE???

I’d like to apply for Accounting and Finance at LSE…
A levels (predicted): Maths A*, FM A/A*, Physics A/A*, Econ A/A*
GCSEs nine 9s + one 8 in eng lang + A in FSMQ
I also do Gold DofE and ABRSM Grade 8 piano (although I don’t think it’s relevant)
What do I need to do to get into LSE?
Do I need to do essay competitions or olympiads? Are they important?
Is work experience a good idea? Where can i find opportunities? Summer schoo?

What are other unis i can consider?
My current thoughts: Warwick, kings, bath, UCL

Please let me know anything you wish to share, id be very grateful!!!

Hiya,

Firstly, congratulations on your A Level results! According to LSE's website, "LSE is a highly competitive institution. The high level of competition means that achieving, or being predicted to achieve, our usual standard offer grades does not guarantee that an offer of admission will be made. In 2023, we received approximately 26,000 applications for roughly 1,800 places."

If you are from a lower socio-economic background, attended a state school, or have attained high grades within the context of your school then you will also build a stronger application. The same goes for UCL, Imperial, and Cambridge.

As you have reached the grade requirements, your extracurriculars would likely be of utmost importance. I would recommend reaching out to Accounting and Finance Profs at LSE to ask them how to strengthen your application/personal statement. I did this when applying to post grad programmes in 2023, building a rapport with your future professors can help, it certainly did for me. It may also be worth reaching out to current students on LinkedIn, to ask them for any advice on how to strengthen your application.

As for your personal statement I think it's important to show that you have a deep interest in Accounting and Finance, i.e. work experience/shadowing at relevant firms, well read on the subject, future aspirations, etc. The personal statement is your chance to stand out from the rest.

All the best & I hope you get a place!
DG

Your grades seem solid. As someone else said, personal statement will be very important for LSE. You don't need competitions. Even more, unless they are something really major, it doesn't make sense to dedicate too much of your PS to them. I got into LSE this cycle and did not have any huge achievements or really anything very interesting going on. They just want to see your academics are good and you have a genuine passion for the subject.

"I also have Gold DofE and ABRSM Grade 8 piano" - these are irrelevant. Top UK unis are only looking for academic achievement that are relevant to your degree.

Clearly you have the grades, so you have a good shot.

You need to have a great personal statement, but it is not about the quality of the writing, but much more about the things that you have done i.e. what you have done to demonstrate that you have a passion for the course that you are applying for, and that you are well suited for it?

It sounds like you don't know yet if you want to choose Accounting and Finance, or Economics. I think you need to decide, and then do super curriculars in that subject which you can talk about in your PS like, reading/analysing/comparing books, essay competitions, MOOCs, seminars, podcasts, interviews etc. You don't have to do them all, but enough to show a passion, or at least that you have a very good understanding of what you are applying for, so that they can come to the conclusion that you are well suited for it.

Those are probably the best results you can ask for.. just make sure you have a great & compelling personal statement, highlighting things you've done outside of studies

Imperial has poor student sopport and is best avoided.

That degree at Imperial you're referring to is heavily, heavily mathematical and is for the most part a maths degree. It's great in terms of opening doors, but seems pretty different to what the OP actually wants to study.

You can apply for any of the courses you mentioned with your grades. However, you should first decide on whether you want to do A&F or Economics. They are both very different courses, and those super competitive universities will want you to show passion for your subject in your personal statement. You don't need to do competitions if you don't want to, there are lots of other supercurricular activities you can do instead.

LSE surely can't be that bad? It has a fantastic library with 5.000 study desk spaces and copies of all the core textbooks too. 🙂

Hey could you also send me the personal statement as reference. I'm stuck on the topics to write about because of the wide variety to talk about.

Thank you! When should i start writing it if i want to get it done by October? Who would give good advice on editing it? Just my tutors and teacher, or should i seek external assistance? I had a looked at the IC course but it seems very mathematically rigorous! Also, my tutor is writing my reference, would it be a good idea to have an alumni write one too? Thank you so much for your help! ❤️
