GCSEs

How can I convince my school to (potentially) let me take more GCSEs than normal and sit some early? Also, if I were to not be allowed to by my school, how much’d AQA English Language / German / Religious Studies and Edexcel Maths cost to sit privately on average? Thank you so much.

hi, are you a native german speaker? since if you are and you can prove you would get a strong grade (7+) if you sat early i don't see why they wouldn't let you sit it early. from a google search apparently each individual exam costs around £100 to sit privately though 😭 hope this helps!

Thank you! I'm not a native speaker but I consistently get 91% - 100% in tests, and I'm planning on taking quite a few GCSEs so I'd like to get a few out of the way early.

Why do you want to take GCSEs early? Universities like to see a lot taken together in Year 11 - this shows you can cope with workload. Your school's results will also be messed up by taking exams early and you'll have to declare every grade.

I'm aiming (emphasis on aiming) to take a large number of GCSEs - therefore it'd be helpful to complete a few early. In terms of universities liking to see a lot taken together in Year 11, there still would be a large number completed in Year 11, so I feel as though that doesn't matter hugely. I don't mind the last two consequences that you mentioned, I feel as though the added confidence from completing GCSEs early (hopefully) and lifted stress on a few subjects outweigh those personally.

This is very unwise - universities tend to look at best 8 in Year 11 so you are wasting your time taking them early. If you get weak grades early they have to be declared on Ucas so it really is not worth it. I'm a teacher and we wouldn't allow this at all and how will you get time off to take the exams elsewhere?

Thank you for your replies. I will think in detail and consult with my school before making decisions, but many schools I know of are willing to allow some students to occasionally complete some early. I will definitely take what you say into account.

Very rarely we'll allow a native speaker to take one GCSE early but that's very much an exception - it's a state selective school.

When you apply to uni you have to declare all the grades from every GCSE you have taken ie those in Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 - not a very good idea to make you do those early.

ah fair enough. maybe get your school to make you sit a whole gcse set of papers, prove you can get a strong grade across all the papers and take it from there? personally i struggled maintaining good grades in the minimum number of subjects (i took 9 which i think is the standard) so i can't relate to this but just shooting out ideas. good luck!!
