Student finance evidence

I started a foundation course in Anglia Ruskin University in May, 2024 just after I got my Indefinite Leave Remain in April. Student finance is asking for evidence of Long stay of about 20 years in the UK. I have lived in the UK for ten years. So, I called the student finance and was told it was because of the academic year which 2023/2024. I was told to get that evidence because I had my ILR after 2023. Please i don't understand. Meanwhile, it has been confirmed by the Home Office that I am legal for the past 3 years. Thanks.

Hi Galifye,

You need to hod Indefinite Leave to remain on the first day of the first academic year of the course. You mentioned that you gained this status in April, this means you would have to have held that status prior to the 1st of April. It sounds like you didn't have the status within the qualifying period which is why they are asking for evidence of your long residency.

Thanks, Clare

So what do I do since I haven't stayed in the country for 20 years?
Hi there. If you are unable to meet the residency requirements' for your intake, or provide evidence, then you would not be eligible to apply if you don't meet any of our criteria.

We can only offer non-account specific queries here. You can check out the eligibility criteria here: https://www.gov.uk/student-finance/who-qualifies

If you gained ILR in April and applied on a later intake such as July or September, you may be eligible since you would have gained ILR before the start of the Academic Year. Thanks, Leah.

Hi Leah, If someone I know very well, who just got her ILR on the 8th of May after the the first day of the academic year and hasn't even stayed 10 years in the country, can be considered eligible for funding, why won't the one who got hers on the 3rd of Apr, just 2 days after can't be considered eligible and has lived 10 years in the country isn't eligible. Do you think it is fair? Please how do I appeal this?

Hi there,

You need to hold the correct status at the start of the academic year. I would suggest calling us so we can check your application and advise further.

Thanks,
Claire
