A-level English Literature NEA

Hello there!

I am currently preparing my English Literature NEA (edexcel) and have been really struggling to find a book that compares well with The Picture of Dorian Gray.

I've had a few recommendations coming from my teachers like The Great Gastpy, American Psycho, and Frankenstein. However, I'm not exactly sure how to link any of them to the texts, or I have not found the overall story too interesting to make an investment. I'd really appreciate any recommendations or guidance you could give on the already listed texts.

Hi blahblahblah.
It depends on what your line of interest in 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' is. For your final NEA drafting, you'll need a specific title to address, but that's a little way down the line yet. I'm guessing you have a vague idea of what it is that interests you about 'TPDG', but have a look at 'Dr Faustus' (Christopher Marlowe), and see if that sharpens your planning a bit.

i’m doing AQA so i’m not sure how similar it is, but my texts are dorian gray and american psycho. for themes to compare you could look at corruption, decadence/consumerism, the gothic (slightly harder for AP i think, less to talk about), violence/evil, that sort of thing.
i know for the great gatsby you could talk about a lot of similar things. haven’t read frankenstein but it’s good for the gothic apparently.
hope this helps

Thanks for the reply,

Unfortunately, we can't do Dr Faustus as it is part of our set reading. However, I am starting to lean towards Frankenstein and the theme of loss of innocence (it's not completely settled yet)

Hello there.

I was looking at American Psycho, particularly with the theme of obsession, as both Patrick and Dorian share very narcisistic tendencies that ultimately lead to their downfalls. But I've figured you can kinda do that with Gatsby and Victor Frankenstein, too.

oh absolutely, i think obsession is a good topic because there's lots to talk about for all three. which text do you think you'll do?
