Will Failing A Non-Core Unit Mean I Won't Get The Full National Extended Diploma?

I'm doing an BTEC Extended Diploma Information Technology course and I'm worried about one unit that I have left due to deadlines. Will failing that non-core unit mean I won't get a qualification?

Unit in question is Unit 15: Customising and Integrating Applications.

Will I get my Overall Qualification or just an award of the individual units?

I ask because I got different information from my teachers and im worried.

I have also checked Pearson website as I believe I meet the minimum requirements for getting the qualification.

Hello, I’m pretty sure that failing one of the optional unit will have a huge impact on your overall grade, so it’s best that you actually try to achieve grades even if you didn’t want to as they are important. Don’t worry if you haven’t achieved it. You will still get your qualifications which is good.

The fact that the official grade calculator has given you an overall grade a strong indicator that you'll fine, and well done for checking the specification itself.

I'm just going to step through the bullet points in the "To achieve any qualification grade, learners must:" text you've quoted from the specification:

complete and have an outcome (D, M, P, N or U) for all units within a valid combination

So you need to complete Unit 15, although the grade you achieve - even a U isn't important. (I'll come back to this in a moment.) In terms of "a valid combination", some BTECs group the optional units, and say you must complete a certain number from each group. This BTEC isn't like that. You must complete all the mandatory units (1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 11 and 14) and any six optional units. So we can tick this box.

achieve the required units at Pass or above shown in Section 2, and for the Extended Diploma achieve a minimum 900 GLH at Pass or above (or N or above in external units)

So, you've passed all the required (mandatory) units. The sum of the GLH (guided learning hours) of the units in which you've achieved a pass or above comes to 1020 GLH. So you've met the "minimum 900 GLH" requirement. Tick. (You could have got away with a U in three of the optional units and still met this requirement - a fact with the grade calculator confirms.)

achieve the minimum number of points at a grade threshold.

Well, clearly you've done that. Tick.

So you're good.

The only risk is their use of the word "complete". So you can't just not do Unit 15. You must complete the assessments - you just don't have to complete them very well. So don't let the deadline pressure prevent you from handing in your work - that could be fatal to the qualification as it could be argued that you have failed to "complete" the unit.

@bamtutor - agreed?

You're right that one unit can have an impact on your overall grade. However, using the details in the first screenshot above and feeding them into the grade calculator, we can see that obtaining a Pass in Unit 15 (compare with a U) has precisely zero impact on the overall grade of MMP. The same is true of a Merit. A Distinction in that one unit will, however, bump the overall grade up to an MMM. So, hardly "a huge impact on your overall grade".

Agreed. You can pass with a U for U15, which means you need to submit it, which is probably why your teacher is saying you won't pass if you don't hand it in.

Thanks for confirming. (PRSOM.)
