Can't leave stuff at home. Need advice

So I'm starting uni in 2024 and moving into halls. I have quite a bit of stuff as my belongings(a guitar, a desktop PC, a chair(i have back problems), and a decent amount of clothes) with which I don't know what to do. I probably need them all but at the same time, it's such a hassle moving it all over a 300km distance. I'll probably stay on campus during the summer as well.

Moving into university halls can indeed present a logistical challenge. Here are some practical tips to help you navigate this situation:

1.

Prioritize Essentials: Start by identifying items that are essential for your comfort and academic needs. Your guitar, desktop PC (if necessary for studies), and chair (for your back problems) seem essential. Clothes can be packed efficiently in suitcases or boxes.

2.

Shipping Options: Look into shipping services that specialize in student moves. Some companies offer discounted rates for students and can transport your belongings safely over long distances. Compare costs and delivery times to find the best option for you.

3.

Storage Solutions: Consider storing some items locally instead of transporting everything immediately. Look for storage facilities near your university where you can keep non-essential items, such as seasonal clothes or items you won't need right away. This can reduce the initial move-in hassle.

4.

Packing Strategically: When packing, use sturdy boxes or suitcases for clothes and smaller items. Wrap fragile items like your PC securely to prevent damage during transport. Label boxes clearly to make unpacking easier once you arrive.

5.

Check University Policies: Review your university's policies regarding move-in dates and storage options. Some universities offer storage solutions or can provide guidance on local storage facilities.

6.

Plan for Summer Stay: If you plan to stay on campus during the summer, ensure your belongings can be securely stored in your room or in designated storage areas provided by the university. Coordinate with your hall's administration to understand their policies and procedures.

7.

Reduce Unnecessary Items: Before packing, consider if there are items you can live without or easily replace once you're settled. Minimizing unnecessary items can lighten your load and make the move more manageable.

8.

Ask for Help: Don't hesitate to ask friends or family for assistance with packing, transporting, or storing your belongings. Having extra hands can make the process quicker and less stressful.

By planning ahead and making informed decisions about what to bring and how to transport it, you can streamline your move into university halls and ensure a smoother transition to campus life. Good luck with your preparations for uni in 2024!

Hi there,

Good luck starting university in September! Do you have access to a car to transport your belongings? It can make all the difference in terms of transporting everything to university. I didn't have car access so had to compress everything into a large suitcase and a backpack. In this case, it's important to be aware that every additional item would cost more to transport. However, the advice below is very realistic and helpful for managing the logistical challenge. I hope that helps a little!

All the best,

Hi there,
Packing for uni can feel like a struggle, so you're not alone. If you can't (or don't want to) leave any items behind and you're planning on staying on campus over summer, then it may be worth taking these with you. It may be worth looking into hiring a van or booking a courier service to transport anything you're unable to take with you on the first trip.

Hope this helps!

Hello, Coventry University Student Ambassador here!

It must be so exciting to start university soon, I'm sure you'll have a great time changing environments and making new friends!
I wanted to add that, beside hiring a van/car to transport everything, you can also look into shipping, and compare the prices and time frame between the two. Because I am a foreign student, I've also moved my stuff around in multiple trips. You can bring everything that you deem as essential in your luggage, on your first journey, and additionally keep bringing everything else every week, or whenever you are going back and forth. That can also be a hassle, but it will probably be the cheapest option.

Hope this helps!

Kind Regards,
Bianca
