Maths topics for BSc Psychology?

Hey guys!!

Please can you guys suggest the sorts of maths/stats like stuff that tend to come up in year 1 of UG Psychology?

*Context:*

I’m in my early 20s starting from year 1 of UG again after realising I hated my previous course.

I’m super excited to study Psychology but I really want to know what the sort of maths-y topics are - especially for first year.

It’s been years since I did GCSE maths and I was good at it but I need a refresh!

Before anyone says to not stress about prepping before starting year 1, I’ve got ADHD and I can get really hung up on little things so I want to make sure I can teach myself the stats/maths-y bits before we have to do them at uni so I don’t lose motivation/focus etc.

What are the topics that would come up? Pretend you’re talking to someone in year 9 and assume I don’t remember much of GCSEs to be safe please!!!

Hi @DopamineDeficit,

My name is Susannah and I'm in my second year of Psychology with Criminology at ARU. Honestly, what type of maths that is involved in the Psychology degree would depend on the university and the course. You could try checking out the modules you would be doing during your first year - your university might have this on the course page on their website. You could also try and see if you can access reading lists for your course, as they could recommend books for you to help you learn the maths, as well as give a general insight as to what would be covered.

For my course, there hasn't actually been much maths involved, espcecially in first year. I have learnt about statistics and how to use them to analyse, but the calculations have been able to be done through software provided to us by the university. But again, this is just my experience at ARU and could be different at different universities.

I did find that one of the books on my recommended list for first year was extrememly helpful for me to learn about statistics. It's called 'Your A to Z of research methods and statistics in psychology made simple' by Barbara Kingsley and Julia Robertson. It's currently ~£18 on Amazon if you would like to try it out.

I hope this helps and good luck with you Psychology degree 🙂

Susannah (ARU)
