The Student Room Group

i failed a core module and now i'm re evaluating my career choice.

honestly, i didn't choose my current degree out of passion but more because i was persuaded to do so due to job opportunities. i did my a levels in the science field and got all As. i really wanted to do pharm.D or chemistry/biology led degree. unfortunately the uni i can afford only has the degree in biological sciences available and virtually no job prospect except maybe for being teacher which i'm uninterested in pursuing. my current degree is in social science but i failed a core module of economics. i'll have to retake the module with next cohort of students and frankly i don't have the courage to redo it partially because i don't like economics but also because to be able to do this degree, you need minimum of 3 As thus they are all smart students and i'm scared of being judged from peers in my class and the next since i'm the only one who failed. also by failing i just lost my opportunity to being hired by big companies since it's a niche market.

also just to be clear there is a private uni offering pharm.D but it's really expensive and neither my parents nor i can't afford it. i can't also work since the degree is full time 6 days a week. i can't also take a "student loan" out since the bank policy in our country dictates that the parents have to be the one taking out an "educational loan" but my parents are both above 50 and just 10 tens years from retirement. so they don't want to take a huge sum out but also might be because i have a younger sister and they have to provide for her too. on top of that, we're a low income household. i'm seriously really lost and don't know what to do. any advice? please

I would go back to the careers section of your Uni, including welfare and finance and talk through your options. Funding is important but it is not the be all and end all. Sometimes, albeit rarely companies hire and allow you to study at the same time. One thing is for sure, if your heart isn't in the subject you are immersed in you will never get the best outcome. And then you want to make a career out of the same 'dull' subject for 'life' ? Expand your horizons, nationally and internationally. Just look at absolutely everything in the information trawling process; pro's, cons etc; wish list, dream job outcomes etc. This may sound a bit odd but visualise yourself where you want to work, what do you see yourself doing, where do you see yourself? Visualise yourself as happy, successful, working in the field of work of your choice. Then make that happen.

There won't ever be a better time to study and max out your potential? If it is finance you need to explore every option no matter how implausible it may sound. There are always ways somehow to get over the financial hurdles. There are a very small number of kind people who bequest money, grants for small but lucky number to enable them to study and have opportunities. I am assuming you don't have the added complications of looking after any children, or being in a carer role for someone? I don't know who advised you to choose your study subject purely for job opportunities, but this will only end badly. You will get bored, resentful and live continually looking for an escape? You have to have a passion for the subject you study or you will find every part of your course a grind. You will probably exist for twenty to thirty years afterwards and then have so much regrets what could have been. So make that 'could have been' now.

Research for a better tomorrow. Cast your net far and wide and see what information you can find on absolutely everything. Now is a good time to change, your course, your Uni, your life, your living. Just go for where your heart is and if you are determined enough the rest will sort itself out.
