PAT and ESAT

Hi, I would like to apply to Oxford and Imperial to study Engineering. I have a preference for Oxford over Cambridge because I read that Oxford is slightly less competitive.
The problem is that, in order to apply to Oxford and Imperial, I would need to do both PAT and ESAT. Alternatively I could do only ESAT and apply to Cambridge and Imperial.
Do you think that Oxford’s higher success rate justifies the extra effort required to sit both tests?

Nobody in the same situation or having any thoughts on that?
Thanks

Mechanical

Both Oxford and Cambridge offer general engineering courses, but I would have to say perhaps Cambridge does it better, from my search through the course websites. I would lean toward Cambridge over Oxford - don’t choose ur unis based off how easy they are to get into - that’s what backups are for!

Nope

I would strongly recommend attending the ones in Sept to get a feel for them - u may then know which one of ox or cam u prefer?

Suppose that I (slightly because they are fairly equivalent) prefer Oxford over Cambridge and we’re back to my original question

I would probably say apply to cam and Imperial and just do ESAT. Really strengthen ur personal statement tho. Otherwise ur just doing two tests for no real reason.

I'm applying for physics at imperial and oxford, so i'm in the same position that i'll have to do both the ESAT and the PAT. I don't think it will be a major problem, especially as the PAT is all multiple choice this year so it will probably be fairly similar to the ESAT.

I would say visit both universities and see which you prefer, and read about the differences in the course. If nothing else, consider how doing both may be like giving you a second chance in case one exam goes well and the other doesn't, as opposed to losing both cambridge and imperial if the ESAT goes badly.

My son is applying to Oxford and Imperial for Physics so sitting both tests. He is finding the ESAT questions a bit easier than PAT, but the time pressure in the ESAT seems ridiculous so his timed practices are giving him low marks because he has to rush it so much. Has anyone found a good strategy for this issue? He's using old ENGAA papers for practice.

I'm also applying to Oxford and Imperial. Good to have ESAT out of the way, although tougher than expected. How was your experience at the test centre? The erasable booklet didn't agree with me, so thinking what I can do differently for the PAT set-up as I think it will be the same situation.

Girl what did you do because I'm thinking of it now, like I'm in the exact same boat. I wanna do chem eng at oxford and imperial but i dont know if its worth it doing 2 tests or just do the esat and try do really good

If you want to study chem eng, why wouldn't you apply to cambridge? Oxford only offers chemical engineering as a part of the engineering science course, wheras Cambridge actually has a chemical engineering course by itself. Also that way you only have to do the ESAT for both.

i dont do fm and i heard oxford is more forgiving for that

This is wrong. I assume, then, that you are doing Maths, Physics, Chemistry?

Your subject choice (due to lack of FM) is a lot weaker for applying to Oxford Engineering than it is for applying to Cambridge Chemical Engineering.

Ooo I see what you're saying, and it makes a lot of sense. Tysm I'll remember that when the application process starts
