Lancaster collegiate system

Hi. I’m starting med school at Lancaster in October and was kind of confused about the collegiate system? Where is the medical school and why is everyone assigned colleges even if you don’t want uni accommodation?

Hi @Aeshakhan

I have to admit I don't know too much about the medical school, so that part of your question might be better answered by someone else. However, I can help with your question about colleges!

The collegiate system isn't just for dividing people into accommodation, it is a big part of building a community between students. I've loved having the college system during my time at Lancaster, and I know some of my friends who commuted in also enjoyed it because it was an extra way to make friends at university - colleges often organise events specifically for commuter students too!

Each college has it's own elected JCR (Junior Common Room) exec team of fellow students who are dedicated to making sure the students of each college feel heard and represented, and they also organise lots of social events throughout the year including freshers week, balls, trips, and other activities! There are university teams at Lancaster, but each college also has its own sports teams (e.g. football, netball, pool, darts), quiz teams, and other groups allowing for friendly college rivalry and also lots more opportunities to get involved.

Alongside this, each college has it's own college manager, College Advice Team (CAT) made up of staff who are there to support with students wellbeing, and porters who provide 24-hour assistance to students. Having dedicated teams for each college mean that students have easier access to support when they need it!

Each undergraduate college also has it's own bar/cafe space and common room (although you aren't restricted to just your college spaces, you can go hang out wherever) which is a nice communal space to relax between lectures or hang out in an evening.

Hope I could help with your question a little! Good luck for October!

The health and innovation campus is near the gym. If you stood at the entrance driveway and the gym is on the left, it’s to the left of that. You may also have lectures elsewhere on campus at times. Everyone is assigned a college as graduations are via college and department. So daughters graduating this summer and she’s grizedale and graduating with faculty of science and technology. Also you will get to go to the college events as well. She has had barbecues, hog roast which was free. Also colleges have intercollegiate sports where they play against another college. Not just physical sports, there’s darts, dominos, pool etc.
