Ahh, unlucky mate :frown:
It seems very harsh to reject you with such excellent grades. I hope you get offers from other unis, and have a great time studying!

Was StAs your first choice?

hey all has any one got offers or rejections for economics at st andrews if so what were your AS and predicted grades?

I just logged on to find that i was unsuccessful. i got predicted AAA with AAAAB at AS

Sorry to hear that you have been rejected. But although you don't give your subjects I am not that surprised you were rejected. e.g. you are "only" doing 3 A-levels and there are a lot of strong candidates out there and St Andrews is a competitive palce to get into. e.g. TAELT has it the same AAB.1.1 group as Bristol and Bath.

Given that you are doing ICT,Econ and geog at A-level, I am not surprised that St Andrews rejected you.
e.g. You don't have Maths and your 3 A-levels include a less preferred subject.

Business Studies and Econ together is never a good idea, I think politics is a less preferred subject, and its not just A level grades that make up an application.

It could just be St Andrews being gay though, sometimes its hard to predict what unis base their decisions for admissions on.

they told me competion is strong and many good applicant wil still fail to gain a place. but you had good grades too and you took maths i am suprised you didnt get in too

i've been rejected for economics and management today...

I got AAAA at AS and I'm predicted AAAA this year. My subjects are Business Studies, Economics, Maths and Politics.

Slightly Confused...
xx

Sorry to hear that.

But Business Studies is a less preferred A-level subject (i.e. is blacklisted) and has a large overlap with economics. So unis will treat you as a 3 A-level applicant.

And there are plenty of AAA applicants for econ courses at top unis. i.e. there is nothing in the information you gave that makes your application stand out. So I am not surprised by your rejection.

Harsh luck guys, hope all your other applications go well.

I can imagine it may be something to do with the personal statement, they really do read into it. Did you apply for the subject/s exactly on your personal statement? E.g. if you went for Cambridge econ, but econ and m here and your ps was all econ then the management dept would probably reject you.

It seems last year they gave out too many offers in general as well, which took it's toll when it came to allocating student accommodation, so it may be possible that they are erring on the side of caution when giving out offers this year.

Either way, commiserations, I know it sucks now (I felt pretty bitter at my rejections) but you will have plenty of fun wherever you end up.

thx guys, i thin they were a little harsh since im predicted AAA with the AS AAAAB grades stated to back that up. But its all good I talked only about economics in my personal statement. I tihnk its just unlucky. i have a feeling they reject in batches and lok and peoples applications in groups and pick out the best ones unfair

Well given that you had less than great subjects (e.g. no Maths and do have ICT which is less preffered), if St Andrews were to mal-administrate then your chances would have gone up not down.

damn is it that hard to get into StA this year? does anybody have any experience with what they ask from students applying with German Abitur? I thought StA was worth a shot with my grades (14 out of 15 in both Economics and Business Studies, 12-13 in Maths, 1,6 overall), but now Im starting to worry -.-

Id love to study (Financial) Economics at St Andrews, you are so free in your choices there, unlike at most of the other Unis...

I don't know what UK entry requirements are for the Abitur.Any idea how your grades compare with International Baccalaureate?

That may seem an advantage but econ modules in later years build on modules in earleir years. So you would need to choose your options wisely. i.e. need core micro, macro maths and statics in your 1st year to build upon in later years.

according to the official formula to convert IB points into an Abitur grade, 1,6 equals ~38 points.
When I contacted Heriot Watt I was told that they ask 1,8 for AAB-courses.
Sussex Univ. states on their site that AAB equals 1,5 or better.

yes Im aware of that, but the options that are available cover all the courses that interest me. whenever I view the curricula of other Econ courses, they seem either not quantitative enough, or there aren't enough finance courses available...

Where did you get that information from?
i.e. I can't find it on the UCAS website

as for the IB:
http://www.stmuk.bayern.de/imperia/md/content/pdf/zeugnisanerkennung/13.pdf

(Bavarian Ministry of Education)

Abitur grade = 1 + 3(Pmax - IB-Pts)/(Pmax - Pmin); Pmax = 42, Pmin = 24

so my 1,6 equals -42 -1 * [(1,6 - 1) * (42 - 24)]/3 = 38,4

but that applies for IB -> Abitur only, as far as I know the IB is highly regarded among British Unis and hence 38 in IB > 1,6 in Abitur.

Well firstly you should read my extensive sig threads. (including the IB version of TAELT). As well as checking out the economics forum.

Secondly unis are independent in the UK and don't have to take any notice of the standard UCAS tariffs (included here http://www.ucas.com/students/ucas_tariff/tarifftables/)

Thirdly just because you expect to meet a uni's entry requirements they do not have to make you an offer. In fact for economics at the top 10 or so places to get an offer students normally need predictions considerably higher than the typical offers.

Fourthly you should ask your target unis what their typical Arbitur offer is.

Yes they can vary by uni. So that means you do need to ask all the unis you are interested in. But on the upside there may be opportunities: i.e. good places with low Arbitur offers.
Hello everyone,
i applied for Econ&Philosophy...

i have a 39 IB predicted grade, but my PS talks about Politics as well since i applied to Oxford for PPE.
St. Andrews is my first choice, and I'm wondering.. do you think I have a chance?

Oxford - PPE - Interview
Manchester - PPE - Offer
Warwick - PPE - Unsuccessful
Edinburgh - Econ
St. Andrews - Econ&Philosophy

Hmmmm St Andrews is your first choice so you apply to Oxford for PPE that could affect your personal statement and chances? Why would you do that?
well, i wanted to try my chances, and at the time i wasn't as set on st. andrews as i am now
