foundation at UoM

I want to take a foundation year for EEE at UoM. Do I need to take another specific test other than IELTS to be accepted?

sorry newb Q - is Foundation a route for folks who would be applying from school but for some reason have struggled with their A levels?

My daughter has had lots of medical issues in the last 2 years and may struggle to get the standard entry requirements

Depends on the uni and how they position their foundation year:

Some unis have international foundation years that are specifically for international fee status students.

Others have foundation years mainly targeted at highly achieving students who just did the "wrong" subjects for the course in question (e.g. an engineering foundation course for someone who got As and such, but did e.g. all humanities/social sciences or only one science, or the "wrong" sciences).

Some have their foundation years specifically designed as a widening participation programme for those who meet specific criteria (e.g. eligibility for free school meals, POLAR quintile standing, care experienced, etc).

Finally some just use them as a way to accept students who may not have performed as well in their exams but who may succeed on the course, but that they feel need an additional year to ensure they are "up to scratch".

You'd need to check exactly what the requirements of the foundation year course(s) in question you are looking at.

Note that if they had a lot of medical issues, did they get any support in terms of extenuating circumstances from the school/exam board? Although potentially too late now, for posterity at least this is always something that is good to pursue at the time as it can change outcomes.

In any event at this stage it may be more pragmatic to retake A-levels if the issues are resolved now - as due to the extenuating circumstances it's unlikely them being retakes would be an issue, and it would usually give more flexibility when applying subsequently (as it doesn't "lock you in" to a single uni - remember foundation years are not transferable qualifications and so there is no guarantee one can do a foundation year at one uni and then reapply to another), and also doesn't potentially affect any student finance entitlement.
