failed 2 modules in first year law

hi guys,
i’ve gotten my results and have failed 2 modules, one from semester 1 and the other from semester 2. what is annoying is they are both 24 hour open book assignments. i have to resit at the end of august and my mark is capped at 40. is it likely if i fail again, i will have to resit the whole year again or will i just have to retake those modules whilst continuing into second year.

That depends on your degree regulations.
Hi there,

Firstly, well done for getting through your first year at University! Moving to a university, starting student life, and keeping up with your studies is incredibly hard, and that is an achievement in itself.

The re-sit policies will depend on the university that you are studying at. Without knowing your Uni's policies for your course I can't guarantee this, but for the majority of courses and universities, your 1st year grades do not count towards your overall grade. This means that the cap on the resits won't impact your degree grade.

I would imagine that yes, if you are unsuccessful in the resits, you will probably be asked to re-sit the year, as it isn't very common to re-take modules from 1st year into 2nd year. However, that's ok! Quite a few students re-sit their 1st year, and then go on to perform even better in 2nd and 3rd year because of their extra foundational knowledge gained from re-taking 1st year.

Keep your chin up! You've got this, all the best for your resits.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you failed your modules. It us good that you would be able to retake the assessments for a chance to progess unto the next year.

Most universities usually would require you achieve a certain amount of credits to progress to the next year and this would make it difficult to progress to the next year.

It is important however to ask the university staff as they would be more informed on this. Whether you fail may also be based on if the modules you are retaking were 100% of the entire modules grade which a 40% grade cap would make impossible to pass.

Therefore, if it may be about 60% of the module grade, the 40% cap would be in conjunction with whatever grade you achieved in the other assessments for the module. Which would determine whether you pass or fail.

I hope that helped to clear things up a bit, I would recommend talking to a member of your law school and finding out more definitive answers.

Good luck with your exams,

Glory.
