read through previous threads by people who got onto the grad schemes and see what they did. I think a common theme is that they were well prepared very early. Every year people post that they hadn't heard of sping weeks before the deadlines for applications passed.

Visit the university careers centre as soon as you can and definitely in your first week there. Make a point to drop in each week to see what you can learn.

Look for opportunities to develop and demonstrate leadership skills.
