can I study computer science without physics and further maths?

Hi everyone, so I am currently taking A level Maths, Computer science and English language. I've heard that Further maths and Physics is required in some unis but I'm not that good at Physics and I can manage Maths but I've also seen many people say that Further maths is super hard.

So, I was wondering if I could still get into abroad unis in the UK, it doesn't have to be any top ones necessarily.

Have you looked at the 'entry requirements' for CS on a range of different Uni websites?
It will state clearly what is essential and if there are any additional 'preferred' subjects.

Hey there 👋

I would start by writing a list of some universities that you are thinking of applying to, factoring in the course modules, location, and anything else that would be important to you.

From there, you can look at the entry requirements on the universities’ websites and see if these subjects are a requirement, as every university is likely to differ.

Writing.... a letter?
And what would be the point of looking at the entry requirements after they have done this?

Of course this can be done at the same time, but my fundamental point is to establish which universities they may like to attend and then looking at the entry requirements for these universities, as opposed to just looking at entry requirements as the focal point because choosing the right university for them should be more than just entry requirements. Have a nice day.

By looking online, you should be able to get into some non-top ranked universities, there are even some (lower ranked) universities that don’t even require maths. If you have a chance I definitely recommend giving further maths a shot, whether it’s learning some content at home, doing an AS/doing it externally as although it is extra work, I find it’s really rewarding as it really enhances my knowledge of the normal maths a level so I spend little time revising the normal maths content due to all the extra practice I get doing further maths content. Top unis will likely disregard you if you had the option but chose not to take further maths.

(I was really apprehensive about taking further maths but decided to give it a shot with the mindset ‘I’ll drop it if it’s too much’ but I really enjoy it it’s my favourite subject)

Very few universities require Further Maths or Physics for Computer Science courses. Most leading ones look for A level Maths but below that many will accept you with GCSEs. Check each university's entrance requirements.

Here is Bath's requirement
A level Typical offer
A*A*A
A*A*A in three A levels including A in Mathematics.

This is Exeter's requirement
A-LevelAAA - AABGCE AL Maths grade B Candidates may offer GCE AL Maths, Pure Maths or Further Maths.

This is Swansea's requirement
A Levels: ABB-BBB. If not studying A Level Maths, Computer Science or Physics, applicants must have GCSE Maths Grade B (6).

A level Maths is enough for many - have a look yourself and don't listen to uninformed advice.
