For Part 7b, I understand everything about the method except for the fact that they take acceleration to be positive and displacement to also be positive, when they are both in different directions?
Even if part a they state that a = -9.8 whilst s = 8.3 so I'm not sure why I am meant to ignore the negative in Part B.

Is it maybe because of the fact that the question asks for speed, therefore the negative signs can all be ignored as speed is just a scalar quantity and therefore has no direction?

In a) they use
v^2 = u^2 + 2as
and as a is negative, the sign for 2as flips
In b) they use
u^2 = v^2 - 2as
and as a is negative, the sign of 2as flips

Yes my bad I didn't pay attention to that, thank you
