AS further maths in year 13

Hi, i would like some advice on wether it’s worth it to take AS further maths in year 13.
I currently do maths, physics and economics. I am predicted a high A in maths and I would like to do mechanical engineering at uni. Even if it’s not required for some unis i still think it could be quite helpful for my course.

If you really enjoy maths then why not. If you do not need it for a university place then try to find out how they will treat the course. For example if your 3as offer turns into 3 As and a grade for further maths then why take the risk?

Hi!

Definitely take AS further maths if you will enjoy it and want to take it. As you know it isn't required to have it! As well as this, I would say that in first year mechanical engineering (which I study) everyone in the course is brought up to the same level whether people took further maths or not. And, all the maths needed you will be taught, some of it people will have done in further maths, but it wouldn't put anyone at a disadvantage if you didn't take it.

Hope this helps!

Kind Regards,

The key maths skills in FM that will benefit you in your first year would be 3D vectors and some further differential equations (depending on which options your class took)

Yes I really enjoy maths, my favourite subject! Thank you, I’ll have a look at the courses.

If you enjoy it and are very good at it, then you could give it a go. The stuff you do in further maths may come in useful with the course you want to do.
You could always drop it if its too much anyway if the worst comes to the worst.

i really doubt that it would be made an offer condition - 2 people in my year picked up an as in y13 (1 applying for chem picked up as fm and one applying for geography picked up as chem) and it was not a requirement from unis like imperial, warwick, exeter

most unis don't even take as levels into account anymore if you're applying from england
