I'm not looking forward to my graduation ceremony anymore

I was looking forward to it when I booked my place. I'm not anymore. I've already hired my gown and stuff as well. What was other people's experience of their ceremony? Thanks for reading.
How come you're not looking forward to it anymore? Is there a particular reason? Has something changed?

Personally, I've had three graduation ceremonies (and hope to have my fourth and final one in summer 2025!) and, even though it was a weird run-up and experience to it due to my circumstances, I'm really glad I attended all three. If you have friends/friendship groups from your uni, this may be the last time you're all together - so that's special and worth showing up for
Hi,

I attended my undergraduate graduation in November 2023, and really enjoyed it. I was worried about walking across the stage and collecting my degree, but i shouldn't have worried as it was a really wide stage and it was made so tripping or falling over would be very difficult if not impossible. A lot of people at graduation will be focused on themselves, and may also be quite worried about certain aspects, given that its a big celebration of your time at university, which can feel quite overwhelming at times. The day goes by very fast, but it is such a lovely and emotional day. I have my masters graduation in November 2025, which I am looking forward to more this time around, as I know what to expect as I have already done it once.

Is there any reason that your no longer looking forward to it anymore?

I'm so sorry to hear you have abusive parents. That can be extremely hard to manage :frown: I'm not sure what to advise, other than trying to spend more time with friends than your parents on the day if at all possible. You deserve to celebrate your degree without having to worry about your parents :console:

Hello!

I’m sorry to hear you’re not looking forward to it anymore due to your parents. Is there any way you could get your university to help you out with this?
For example, you could explain your circumstances and request they send you an email stating that there was some sort of mix-up and they can no longer provide the two extra tickets you got for your parents. It might be dishonest, but your graduation day is to celebrate your achievement and if you want to celebrate it by yourself without the stress of an abusive environment, you’re absolutely permitted to that.

I hope this helps and I hope you have a lovely time!

Would it be possible for you parents not to come? Have you spoken to your university about this? They may be able to offer you some advice and help.

This is the samaritans contact details, they are a confidential charity. They are also available 24/7 to contact and are absolutely lovely people. They are completely free to call.

I don't want to tell my uni about this. And my parents want to go, so I can't exactly tell them not to come. I just hope the day goes fast.
