Economics or STEM at Nottingham for Investment Banking

Hi all!

Im aiming for IB and high finance careers, considered between Bsc Economics or Bsc Mathematics and Data Science at Notts.

I have interests in both econs and maths+comsci.

Here is what I know (pls correct me if im wrong):
1. Notts is a strong semi target for IB and finance fields.
2. Uni > Degree
3. Notts is famed for Economics.
4. STEM degrees showcase quantitative abilities, and with a degree like maths+data science, my opportunities exceed that of economics, whereby im able to consider finance, trading, quant roles, data science, etc, except maybe hard economic roles in academia, or pure accounting roles which i have no interest for both.

So based on what I think I know, here are my questions:
1. Is it dumb to go for anything other than econs at Notts, considering im aiming for finance/IB and notts is famed for econs?
2. Will getting finance internships be hard while im still studying and have yet to build a track record proving i have an interest in finance and business? (I have an accounting background and currently intern in a finance role though, was hoping I could leverage this but still unsure if the STEM would be too much of an obstruction)

Any thoughts/advice/rants even are all appreciated! No tldrs here, i just want all the info i can get.

Many thanks in advance

Hi i'm currently a second year student studying Econ also at a semi target (bristol/bath/durham). I think Maths and Data science (or any other quant subject like stats, econometrics) certainly wouldn't close any doors when compared to Economics. In fact i'd argue a Maths degree would open more doors than Econ (e.g if u decide u want to be a trader). However, i'd say its more difficult to get a first in (which you should probs aim for if going for Investment banking) and an easier degree will give you more time to spend applying and building that finance interest/ track record .

Yes, a finance internship is incredibly difficult, most people apply to ~50+ before landing, however, if you still aren't even in university you have loads of time to develop that. I would suggest reading the financial times, taking some online courses (financial markets by yale on coursera (free)) and joining invesrment clubs when in your first year. That will position you well. If you do that over summer and start of first year, you should have a ok chance at landing a spring week or summer internship. Read into how to break into IB theres loads of stuff online.

Not too sure about Notts being famed for Econ but theyre a solid university, as you said semi target. If youre yet to apply to uni id suggest applying to at least one target like warwick or UCL.

If you have any more questions lmk.

unfortunately it wouldn't really matter because according to the artful_lounger on here, you may lose out on competition to people who study history of art, anglo saxon norse and celtic and a whole of bunch of mickey mouse degrees at cambridge, oxford, lse, ucl and warwick. smh I don't understand it either.
on a more serious note tho (although that was technically half, serious), econ is brill at nottingham; so is maths, econ and maths; yeah anything related like that really but it doesn't really matter. nahhh you should be able to make spring week applications, internship ones etc. and then hopefully convert to summer analyst in y3 since at notts I'd like to think that the workload there is more manageable than at say imperial or something, yk; also on linkedin a considerable number of people who have gone to notts/are going to notts (even for courses like history, though not many because not many people who study courses like these even want to go into banking in the first place but they still could do), are breaking into IB so yeah, man, you're fine still you're calm. i'm going to kings myself but not really focussed on banking tbh tho but yeah
