Can you apply for a student visa online?

I’m a UK student going to be studying in France from September and I’m researching how to apply for my student visa and on the etudes en France page it says you have to book an appointment at a visa centre in London/Manchester to get your visa.

That seems kinda crazy to me as I live in Cornwall and can’t afford travel/somewhere to stay in London or Manchester and can’t get time off work to waste several days doing that. I don’t see why in the 21st century you wouldn’t be able to upload your ID/documents online and just apply for it online. Is it correct that I will have to travel over 300 miles, give up several days of my life and spend over £500 to submit some documents in person? That seems absolutely ridiculous to me but everything I can find online says that is the procedure and everyone else in my study abroad class is also saying they think you need an in person appointment.

I don't want to be brutal but... yep. You pretty much always need to go to an in-person appointment at the country's nearest embassy or consulate to get a visa.
