Eating Disorder Recovery - Research Study

Hi all,

I am currently studying MSc Psychology and I am doing my dissertation.

The topic I have passionately selected is the concept of recovery in eating disorders. I am wanting to interview people who have had experience of an eating disorder and now identify as recovered. What I would like to do is gain insight into recovery from your eyes. Some of the questions for example would be along the lines of when did you know you were recovering, how did you identify as recovered, what helped or didn't help, etc.

The interviews will be held on campus at my University (or in exceptional circumstances can be conducted over Microsoft Teams). All interviews will be on a 1:1 basis.

As many of us know, recovery in eating disorders is poorly researched or documented. Recovery can be described as a journey rather than an end goal at times. This opportunity would allow me to explore this massively difficult illness and the challenges that come with it directly from YOU.

All information will be completely confidential - I will have no need nor desire to keep sensitive information. I urge you to consider contributing to this immensely important research area, so that maybe we can help create new pathways for people who are suffering. Even if one person benefits from the research I complete it will be one person more than none.

If you do wish to contribute or would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact me as soon as you can!

Really hope some of you will come forward

Thank you so much

What age do you have to be to participate?
Also, if you’re mostly recovered but still struggle in one or two places does that still count?

Not even going to say where your university is?

Anyone over the age of 18 can participate.

As long as you are not in a state of relapse then yes you can contribute. DM me for further information 🙂

I apologise I should have clarified I am in the West Yorkshire area. Specific university will be declared to people on an individual basis via direct messaging should they confirm they would like to take part 🙂

Ah, I’m still 17, sorry. Good luck with the study though!

Eating disorders is very interesting, but you really need to state on here if you have had ethical approval and ideally also the key inclusion and exclusion criteria (formal dx etc). Talking about these things can be hugely traumatic for someone, and we just need to see what safeguards you have put in place.

Not sure why you are coy on university, as informed consent means giving people full information before they consider taking part. They shouldnt have to contact you first to get this information, particularly as the group you are recruiting are known to be particular vulnerable.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for your feedback.

I have had ethical approval of course, else I wouldn't be asking for participants.

Inclusion criteria is anyone who identifies as recovered from an eating disorder AND:

is over the age of 18

is fluent in English

Exclusion criteria - is quite self-explanatory really - if you are not recovered, under the age of 18, or are unable to speak in fluent English, then you will be unable to take part in this research.

I'm not being coy about the university, this site has thousands of viewers and as part of my ethical guidelines I need to safeguard myself also... Hence why I stated if anyone would like further info contact me via DM and I will be happy to send them the full information sheet, and then they are able to make their own minds up whether they would like to take part or not. I am well aware of the potential traumatic effects around discussing eating disorders. The information sheet is exceptionally detailed and contains the safeguards put in place to support people should they require it.

I was hoping that by using this site, fellow students would come forward due to the shared academic understanding we all have.

Like I stated in the OP - should anyone like further information please don't hesitate to DM me and I will provide the full information.
