Managing Workload and Part-Time Jobs: Tips from a Student Ambassador at UH

Hi everyone!

Balancing a part-time job with your uni workload can be challenging but absolutely manageable with the right approach. As a student ambassador at Herts, I’d like to share some tips that have helped me and many of my peers successfully juggle both responsibilities.

Prioritise and Plan

Time Management: Use a planner or digital calendar to schedule your classes, study sessions, work shifts, and personal time. Block out specific times for studying and stick to them.
Prioritise Tasks: Determine which assignments and tasks are most important and tackle those first. Break larger projects into smaller, manageable tasks to avoid last-minute stress.

Communicate Effectively

With Employers: Be upfront with your employer about your academic commitments. Most employers are understanding and will try to accommodate your schedule, especially if they know in advance.
With Lecturers: Don’t hesitate to discuss your workload with your lecturers if you’re struggling to keep up. They can offer advice and, sometimes, flexibility with deadlines.

Use University Resources

Academic Support: Make use of the university’s academic support services, such as tutoring, study groups, and workshops. These can help you stay on top of your coursework more efficiently. Find out more about the support offered here
Career Services: The university’s career services can assist you in finding part-time jobs that are more flexible and understanding of your student schedule. Find out more here

Get Involved with On-Campus Jobs

Working on-campus can be a great way to get involved with the university community while earning some money. Here are some part-time job opportunities at UH:

Student Ambassador: Help with university open days, tours, and outreach programs. It's a fantastic way to develop communication skills and meet prospective students.
Resident's Assistant: Support students and manage housing facilities during off-hours.
Student Technology Mentor: Help staff use tech tools to enhance teaching.
Casual Roles: Temporary work in administrative or IT roles across both campuses.

The Students' Union also advertises jobs, including professional roles and collaborations with local businesses. For more details, check the University career page.

Take Care of Yourself

Health and Well-being: Ensure you’re getting enough rest, eating well, and taking breaks. Burnout is real and can affect both your academic performance and work efficiency. The university also offers a range of support and wellbeing services, if you need it.
Stress Management: Practice stress-relief techniques like mindfulness, exercise, or hobbies you enjoy. Remember, it’s important to maintain a balance.

Learn from Others

Peer Advice: Don’t hesitate to seek advice from fellow students who are also working part-time. They can share practical tips and strategies that have worked for them.
Ambassador Insights: As a student ambassador, I’ve found that working part-time has helped me develop better time-management skills and discipline, which have been beneficial both academically and personally.

Balancing a part-time job and your studies is a valuable experience that can teach you important life skills. By prioritising, planning, and taking care of yourself, you can successfully manage both and make the most of your time at Herts.

Feel free to ask any questions or share your own tips and experiences below. Let’s support each other in this journey! ☺️
