I have never watched anime. What can I watch to get me started?

As the titles says, I have never seen any anime in my life, other than clips online. what are some good examples for stuff to watch that might get me into it?

I only know two, evangelion and akira. The former is actually best by watching the DVD box set as it is much longer, although the creator did condense them into 4 movies with slight story differences.

Hello! Anime is a huge medium, with series catered towards all sorts of ages and demographics, and encompassing all genres. So my question to you would be, what kind of films, books or TV series do you like? I can give better recommendations the more information I have to work with, but a few generally good titles available on Netflix would include:

Cowboy Bebop (Netflix)
Delicious in Dungeon (Netflix)
Spy x Family (Netflix)
My Hero Academia (Netflix)
Dr. Stone (Netflix)

I can recommend for other streaming platforms too, if you don't have a Netflix subscription. :yep:

Or, if you're interested in watching a completely new anime series as it airs weekly, check out my Summer 2024 anime preview thread. New first episode impressions posted every day for the next few weeks. [shameless plug]

I gravitate more to crime or comedy, I think when it comes to TV shows and Film. Books, I read the classics, modern classics and some history stuff.

Seems like Netflix is the place to be for your recommendations. Do you think I should try the ones you listed first before I get a Crunchyroll subscription?

What makes your opinion so unpopular, would you say?

I think most of my recommendations would be good in that case, maybe with Spy x Family slightly in the lead. There are quite a few anime based on historical events too, though with the same varying degrees of realism (or lack thereof) you'd see in any other fiction.

Crunchyroll certainly has a lot more anime offerings than Netflix, and they do have a 7 day free trial. Well worth a look if you really want to give anime a try, I just focus on Netflix because people are generally more likely to already have a subscription to that, and it can be a good starting point before committing to any new subscriptions. Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video have a handful of good anime series, too.

The abbreviated series that others have suggested are Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan, just to make them easier to look up.

Thanks for your effort in the replies! I will check them out 😄

I think fictionalised versions of historical events in TV and film can be really fun, like alternate histories and stuff like that.

What is your absolute favourite anime if you had to pick one?

That would be Baccano! - 1930s mafia series with supernatural elements. Very dark and violent in places, but with a lot of humour as well! Unfortunately, I don't believe it is streaming anywhere (legally!) in the UK at the moment, though Blu-rays and DVDs are available.

My favourite series that's readily available for streaming (on Crunchyroll) would be Nichijou - My Ordinary Life, an absurd slapstick comedy with ridiculously ridiculously high quality animation. You said you liked clips online, maybe this will tempt you?

just the way how it's related to arthurian legend and ancient britannia, as well as the whole concept of angels and demons and magic and stuff. It's just raw ykk, that old feel. Swords > guns and that, yeahh, lol. watched it some time ago but from what I can recall)

HOORAY u won't regret it
Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex (and 2nd gig), Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood or original). Second the suggestion of Cowboy Bebop.

Your Name is an anime film moreso than anything, but it's a beautiful and story rich one. It's a good starting point in my opinion if you like psychological romances, similar, or want to feel the impact of what anime can do emotionally.
