Hiya,

I know not getting allocated your top college can be tough, but trust me, once you get to Durham you will end up loving your allocated college. Colleges are more or less the same as each other, so there isn't a big difference aside from accommodation/catering if that is what you're worried about. Trevs is a very underrated college, its located quite close to the science site and has great facilities + great people!

I'm not from Trevs but there are a few student blogs written by students allocated Trevs that you can have a read through for peace of mind. Colleges/college allocations can be quite intimidating but trust me, you will be fine. 🙂

I hope this can help and if you have any more questions, I'm happy to help!

Hi thank you for the response. I guess I'm just disappointed because I had such a high hope that I would at least get any of the colleges I picked so to get one I hadn't even looked into was a shock to the system. I know the college is only a small part of the university experience and I'm sure I will love it eventually and I'm just being whiny about it at the moment, but I can't help but be a bit heartbroken about it... I was hoping I would get into one of those beautiful colleges with old buildings and history, but instead I get one that's horribly ugly and everyone talks crap about and saying how the social life and everything is horrible there.... Like I'm super glad that it's catered and a gowned college which I know is what really matters but still I'm heartbroken 🙃

Hiya,

Of course! It's completely understandable and fair to be disappointed and nervous about your allocated college, especially if you were expecting/hoping something else. I know you were probably hoping for one of the older/traditional colleges but trust me, the facilities on the inside are not as great as the outside 🙂 Although Trevs isn't as old or traditional, the accommodation and facilities/catering are much more modern/better which is great from what I hear (especially as someone who was in a college with extremely dated accommodation/facilities). Also, Durham is full of history so wherever you go or stay, I can guarantee there's a bit of history if you ask around! + Trevs is located 5 mins from the Oriental Museum and Botanic gardens which is great if you're ever looking to destress and explore the surrounding area. And, if you take the number 6 arriva bus from South Road (Outside the entrance to Trevs), it can take you all the way to Bishop Auckland (approx 30 mins) which is a world heritage site renowned for its Spanish Gallery, museum and Castle if you want to do a bit more exploring!

Just to add, I know people often talk bad about Trevs (I'm sometimes guilty of that!) but its mainly silly college rivalries and harmless banter between friends from other colleges 😂 It's a Durham tradition to tease people from different colleges so I promise it's definitely not as serious as it seems. Sure, people joke about Trevs not having the best buildings but people also joke about Hatfield, Castle, Cuths, Hilde Bede, etc. It's part of being a student at Durham. The social aspect is the same at all colleges in my opinion, it all boils down to who you're friends with/whether you're with a sociable group and whether you yourself want to be social. I'm not particularly social so I didn't go out and do much in freshers but Cuths (my college) is quite social and I know people who had similar/different experiences with socialising.

I hope this can help in some way and I'm around if there's anything else you want to ask 🙂
