Graduate Entry Dentistry Tuition Fee Funding

Dear SFE, I have recently been offered a graduate entry place at the University of Leeds. This means I will enter the course in 2nd year and take 4 years to complete my degree. I have a previous BSc in Dental Hygiene and Therapy (3 years) from Leeds, and in 2014 I started a BSc in Pharmacology at the University of Westminster but I dropped out in the first term. From my understanding I should be able to get some maintenance and tuition funding towards my the dentistry degree as I am aware of others who have taken the same route. I made an application to SFE which has been approved for the maintenance loan but no tuition fee funding. As I understand things, I should be able to get a reduced tuition fee loan from SFE. I was unable to get this matter resolved on the phone as I was told my previous degree makes me ineligible for further funding. I am aware that I will have 4 years of previous study on my record but for some reason the advisor on the phone was saying I have 5. This is incorrect and they could not advise me what the 5th year was for. I understand that I may have made an error on my application but of course I need to get this rectified. The course is the Graduate Entry MChD Dental Surgery Programme at the University of Leeds and it aligns with the last 4 years of the 5 year Undergraduate Dental Surgery BDS so yes, effectively going in to 2nd year. It is full time. Please could you advise me of the rules regarding graduate entry dentistry funding for the year 2024/25. Kind regards, Ellena

Hi Ellie,

Did you get any emails with your previous study calculation? Have you had to repeat any years of your previous course?

For Graduate Dentistry we don't pay the full Tuition Fees. For year 1 we'd be able to pay £5785 and then you'd need to self fund the remainder.

Can you please check your emails to see if we've sent anything?

Thanks,
Ross

Hi Ross,

No emails whatsoever… I haven’t repeated any years.

Yes I understood there would be some funding. No sure where to go from here. Spent a long time on the phone to SFE to be told I’m not going to receive funding and effectively “that is that”.

Thanks,
Ross

I'm very sorry about that Ellie.

On public forum we don't have account access so I'm not too sure why it's been declined.

With your degree you've already got, is it with honours? Or just ordinary?

Thanks,
Ross

Hi EllieJacksonn,

As my colleague mentioned we wouldn't be able to advise much further about why it has been declined without account access. You should be able to get funding for graduate entry dentistry based on what you have told us. If you feel there has been an error made with the assessment of your application you would either need to contact us directly and an advisor can refer your application for further review or you can make a formal appeal.

Thanks,
Calum

Hi Calum,

Thanks for the message. So when I speak to someone on the phone, they should be able to send it for further review? The advisor I spoke to told me I couldn’t speak to anyone else and that I wasn’t eligible and effectively “that is that”. I couldn’t really believe it. So just want to make sure I know what I’m talking about when I call again.

Thanks,
Ellena

Hi Ellie,

You can either call us again, or access the live chat function on your online account.

You should be eligible for the support, if you ask for your account to be referred to be reassessed the advisor will be able to do it.

Thanks,
Ross
