Criminal practice CPS trainee scheme

Hi had a few questions as commercial law never excited me I want to ask if the CPS offer there paralegals the SQE course funded by them to be a fully qualified solicitor after working there and showing them your worthy of the course or will I just stay a paralegal forever and have to fund the sqe myself to become a fully qualified solicitor.

Also if I want to get into criminal practice where do I begin because most law firms offer commercial TC which I don’t want how do I apply for qwe in criminal law as cps offer it but I don’t want to put my eggs in one basket.

Do the cps or any criminal firms offer sqe funded by them?

Also starting third year law this sept.

Hi @salim111

It's great to hear that you're interested in a career in criminal law 🙂 Here at the CPS we're committed to your professional development, and there are lots of progression opportunities available to our paralegals. We do offer solicitor apprenticeships to internal applicants - it takes around 5 years to complete, and once qualified you're guaranteed a permanent crown prosecutor role.

I have a question for JadeCPS,
beginning my law school journey this autumn have you got any tips? Especially when wanting to become a CPS barrister
Any societies to join that would improve my chances?

Hi @Frank014

Apologies for the late reply! Here at the CPS, we have a fair and open recruitment process based on merit, so there's no advantage to be gained from joining external societies.

You can find out more about our prosecutor roles here. The page is updated depending on which campaign we're running. Crown prosecutor is our entry-level lawyer role, ideal if you're newly qualified or have limited criminal law experience. Our senior crown prosecutor role offers a great progression opportunity for lawyers with a wealth of criminal practice experience.

You might also be interested in our legal trainee scheme, which you can find out more about here.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions 🙂
