LJMU Failed Deferral

Hi,

If I fail a deferred exam at LJMU would I be given a second chance at the exam?

I had two exams deferred and think I might have failed in both exams.

I've looked at the academic framework regulations for this year, as you can imagine the document has a lot in it regarding referrals/referrals/final referrals/exceptional final referrals etc and I just can't get my head around it.

So these two exams were my 'first attempt' as they were deferred, I'm hoping I'll get a chance to take these again.

These are the framework regulations https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/-/media/files/ljmu/about-us/public-information/academic-quality-and-regulations/246--202324-academic-framework-regulations-for-undergraduate-programmes.pdf

I'm order to establish what sections of the regulations might apply, I have a bunch of questions (sorry).

1. Is this a standard 3-year undergraduate degree? If not, what is it?
2. What year are you in?
3. Are the two exams for two different modules?
4. How many credits is each module worth?
5. If you sum the credits for all of this year's modules (including those for which you had the deferrals and potentially failed exams), do they total 120 credits?
6. You say that you think you may have failed these exams. Would you like to hazard a guess at a mark? Above 30%?

Hi,

This is a foundation year, to progress, I need to pass this year.

I'm in foundation year.

The two exams aref or different modules.

One exam is worth 10 credits, the other for 20 credits.

The sum of all the modules total 120 credits.

The 10 credit module will be a mark of 35%, the other I suspect will be less than 30%.

Thanks.

Thanks for the answers. Unfortunately, you're not eligible for compensation on either of the failed modules, as that requires that, "At least 100 credits at the level must have been passed". (Compensation is where, as long as you've achieved at least 30% in a module worth no more than 20 credits, then then just turn a blind eye to the fact that you failed it and "pretend" you passed it). See UG.C7.8.

As a result, you'll need to take advantage of UG.C7.5 for both modules:
"UG.C7.5 All students have the right to two referral opportunities in any failed module(s). No further attempts are permitted."

I'm slightly confused as to when you will be given the referral opportunity, given that you've already deferred these two exams and so have missed the normal referral examination period (24 - 28 June this year), because that's (presumably) when you'd taken the deferred exams.

"UG.C7.11 A referral opportunity is normally scheduled within the academic year of the first sitting of the assessment."

It seems likely, therefore, that your referral opportunity will need to wait until the next academic year. Have you tried contacting the module leader / programme leader to check when the referral opportunity (should it be necessary) will be?

Thanks so much for the clarification l, it seems that it's likely I'll have to do the referrals next year. I haven't contacted anybody about this yet but I'm going to do that today.

Thanks for your help.

It's definitely worth contacting someone within the uni to double-check.

I've read the academic regulations for a lot of different unis (in order to help people in similar situations to you) and they'll often specifically describe what happens in terms of a referral if the first attempt has been deferred. So the fact that LJMU don't, and we have to assume what they do isn't ideal.

Anyway, you're welcome and good luck! (Hopefully you won't need the referrals anyway.)

Hi,

I suggest giving our Course Enquiries team a call on 0151 231 5090 and explaining to them, as they will then be able to transfer you to someone within the university who can help. 😊

Let us know if you have any more questions!
