Past/present UWS nursing students

Hi, I’m due to start adult nursing at UWS this year and looking for some info from past students in regards to placements. As a single parent I’m now dubious as to whether I can manage. I’m wondering are their any students who like myself were in a similar position, how did they cope with placement and is it do-able? Are you on placement for most of the term? Also when on campus what are the start/end times?

I’ve asked student services but they can’t tell me as time table has not yet been completed.

Appreciate any info you can throw my way. Thanks 😊

Ask the department for a copy of this year's timetable instead. It won't change that much and will give you an idea of what is expected of you.

They gave me a copy of last years timetable which I can’t understand I’m guessing the long blocks of 6 weeks mean placement? How many different placements do students attend? Thanks for helping

I'm sorry but I don't know how and when UWS organise the placements. Call the uni and ask to speak to the nursing course leader.

Hi Shelley ☺️ ☺️

I'll try to assist you out.....
I haven't done my degree at university west of Scotland but did so over in Edinburgh Napier.
The nursing schedule is nearly the same at all universities in Scotland so hoping you will understand better with what I am going to say about it okay.

The nursing degree course is usually based over the whole year ( 52 weeks) with you getting some holidays entitlement at end of each term with a week to ten days of at the end of the academic year at end of August before you start your next academic year in early September. ( Holidays are usually - two weeks at Christmas and New year, about 2 weeks at Easter time, plus end of academic term and any other holidays that the university has scheduled into the nursing degree year - approx 6/7 weeks of per year for holidays).

You will know that you'll have to complete 2300 hours of placements hours and also 2300 hours of university studying weeks - practicals and lectures etc over the 3 years of the nursing degree course..... This works out approx 37.5 hours per week.
Your placements working hours per week can vary depending where you are based ( which particular placements you been allocated) hospital wards you'll be doing around 12 hours shifts ( Nightshift, day shift and weekend working with 4 days of per week )
Outpatient department and GP surgeries work differently as generally they are between 8am - 6pm Monday to Friday with one day off in the week plus free weekends, you might do nursing homes - depending on what there shifts are.

You normally do about 6/7 weeks of placements in a block and you also do about 6/7 blocks weeks at university ( its normally 3 placements blocks and 3 university blocks per academic year you'll roughly do.

I am a NHS Scotland registered midwife currently working within Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board for which I think you'll be working under for your placements etc.

Hope this helps you in some way 🙏 🙏 🙏
