How much do GCSE grades matter when applying for universities?

I'm looking at applying for universities and I'm looking at a doing a foundation course at Loughborough, but he course that I'm looking at says that for entry requirements it says that they want at least a 6 in maths but I got a 5, however this was a near miss with it being only 2 marks off a 6. But can I still be rejected just because of this.

Generally, GCSE results are the first hurdle and tend to be non-negotiable. If you don't meet them, it's often strong grounds for rejection.

If of course you had mitigating circumstances at the time, then there may be some flexibility. I would email them and ask.

Hi @7KRocks ,

Great to hear you are considering Loughborough 🙂

Typically entry requirements for GCSE's are there as the university believes for that course your maths/english needs to be at a certain level to complete the course. However, I don't want to give you the wrong information so I would recommend contacting our admissions team as they will be able to give you more details on this for your position: [email protected]

If you have any other questions please do ask 🙂

Thanks for replying, I know this is late but have you heard of anyone getting in with lower gcse grades or instead getting in with clearing

I was worried about my GCSEs with Loughborough as I needed one more at grade 6 - I had the predicted for a level - my school advised that I should still apply I did and got an offer AAB. However I didn’t get a contextual even though I was eligible. Also I’d just like to note that my reference did talk about extenuating circumstances during gcse and as levels so that may have been a factor. 🙂
