Student finance and course lengths

So I have a weird situation

I’ve previously had 2 years of funding for a previous course I did (business with entrepreneurship with foundation year) and dropped out in the middle of year 1 after completing my foundation year

Before I dropped out I spoke with the university and I should have an extra year so they told me I could just apply another time

Last year I tried apply for a bachelors and I wasn’t given full funding due to the way student finance calculates how much funding you have (current course length - previous completed +1 spare) I only have 2 years of funding remaining

This year I’ve applied on student finance for a foundation year course starting at year 1 (which makes it a 4 year course even if I’m starting in year 1 which means I have the 3 necessary years of funding to complete my course) and got accepted

But now the universities are having problems accepting me like that, on ucas when they give me an offer they change the course to a normal degree which is 3 years which would mean I don’t have enough funding but also wouldn’t match my student finance

The thing I’m finding hard to understand is

I’ve only failed 1 year so if I want to go back I should be able to but because the calculation is using the current course length I feel like I’m being held back due to having done a foundation year

If i was in a standard 3 year course, and had the same situation, I could apply for 2nd year entry and everything would be fine so I don’t see what’s the problem with me trying to go back

Any help, advice or pointing me in the right direction would be much appreciated

Thanks

Hi there,

From the sounds of things, your Student Finance is sorted out for doing the new foundation course but direct entry to year 1 so you would get the support.

The calculation is:

Length of course + additional year - previous study = years of Tuition Fee support.

If the university is not really allowing you to do this then you'd need to take it up with them.
What was the reason you withdrew from the previous course?

Thanks,
Ross

NEW POST

so to make it clear what the universities are doing,

I’d apply on ucas for the foundation year course with my point of entry being first year, the universities then send me an offer for the same course without foundation year changing the total length of the course.

Different universities have offered different reasons

Bournemouth university actually accepted it all with no problems as did Bangor university but every university in London except university of east London have had problems and university of west London claimed that this is fraud and is impossible

Hi Knhs,

You would need to speak to the universities about this, it is not something we advise on at SFE.

Calum
