Sewing Machine in Accommodation

I'm moving into my shared accom in September and want to bring my sewing machine. I'm not doing textiles at uni, I just like sewing for fun :P does anyone know if sewing machines would be considered too noisy for accom, and if I'd need any special permits or something to have this piece of machinery in my room 😭 also, for a little more context, I'm gonna be in what's called a "quiet flat" and I'm by the kitchen so there's only 1 bedroom by me
In principle electrical appliances may need to undergo Portable Appliance Testing by the accommodation team to ensure they are safe. Although I think a sewing machine is probably not likely a concern for that...?

As for noisiness I couldn't really say, if you're just sensible about when you do your sewing probably less disruptive than a lot of other things that will end up happening in halls. Just don't do it at odd hours of the night or when you know everyone is home and probably wanting to not be disturbed (e.g. evening/early morning).

Hi,

In all flats there is usually a noise limitation between 11pm and 7am to ensure you don't disturb people when they are sleeping. Quiet accommodation is just where likeminded people will apply - those who usually are more introverted and not likely to go out or host parties etc.

In terms of having a sewing machine, a girl in my flat in first year had one and nobody had any problems with it but hers was a small battery operated one so not very big or noisy! Like the previous reply says just be mindful of the times using it and beforehand maybe speak to the person in the bedroom near you to let them know.

If you are worried about it being allowed then please don't be afraid to get in touch with your university accommodation team and I'm sure they'd be able to help and offer some reassurance!

Hope this helps, Ella - Lancaster University Student Ambassador

Check the accommodation policy on electronic devices because you don’t want it stolen.

As for noise, just use it at sensible times of day. A ‘quiet’ flat or more no load music than occasional sewing. Also your flatmates are likely to be thankful for your sewing help if you offer it.
