Questions regardjng Academic Gowns for Matriculation

Online it says that all colleges wear gowns for matriculation, (even ungowned colleges) however, I’ve been told that colleges like Van Mildert and St Cuthberts don’t?

I’m hoping someone who knows could tell me if ungowned colleges do or don’t wear gowns for matriculation.

Also, if I’m in an ungowned college, but would like to own a gown for the fun/experience, is that seen as weird? Are all gowns the same or are they college specific? Can I still order a gown to attend formals with friends at gowned colleges?

Thank you

Hiya,

I was at a non gowned/gowned college (St Cuthbert's Society) and we didn't have to wear a gown for matriculation and almost everyone didn't, but if you would like to wear one, you can! That's not always the case for all colleges though, if your college is non gowned, then you don't have to wear a gown. All gowns are the same across all gowned colleges and you can order them before you arrive through colleges or rent them/buy used/cheaper ones from the overheard on facebook 🙂 I will say gowns are not cheap so if your college is non gowned, then you're rarely if at all going to use it, if you'd like to wear one to a formal then you could borrow one off your friend.

Hope this helps!
