Is SQE worth it?

So I’m confused whether to do SQE and become a solicitor or just go pick another career option.

This depends on what you want.

Have you done some work experience/shadowing/vacation schemes/ internships to see if the profession is worth the investment.

If you are unsure then consider your options. I would not get to worried about it. The SQE is designed to make it easier to qualify as a solicitor at any stage in your life. This means if you do decide a different career (providing you have at least a undergraduate degree) you can qualify as a solicitor through the SQE route.

However, like I have said this is should be a decision of what is best for you.

Are you studying law?

I am currently studying law and going to be graduating next year, I do want to work in the legal field but I was put off doing SQE as it gets compared to LPC for being harder and more money draining..

Hey there!!

I am currently an SQE student and I completely understand the confusion with these matters. I think for me it was a decision of knowing what I want to do in my career and then just deciding to go with the route that takes me to that path.

The most comforting thing is to know that its never too late to change anything. If you do take the SQE route, it is very important to find the right provide because it is an expensive course and you need to make sure you are doing it right.

For me that provider was University of Law, it was a tough choice because there are so many providers available but I am very happy with my choice. The teachers are the gift of this university, they are all people who have worked in the field before so you really do learn from the best. Their SQE courses are designed to help you pass with high pass rates so it does really reassure you a lot!

I understand this is a tough decision and I hope you make the best of your options moving forward!!

Don't you even get Sundays off in the ULaw Marketing Team? Tough gig.

Funnily enough, I've just called out the reps at Leicester and UEA for the same thing - replying to old posts where, presumably, the OP has moved on and made their decision.

I understand that these reps have a role to play, but I'm assuming they're compensated and remunerated in some way for those posts. If that's the case, then that should be disclosed as part of their "influencer" role (see the ASA and CAP's document here: https://www.asa.org.uk/static/9cc1fb3f-1288-405d-af3468ff18277299/INFLUENCERGuidanceupdatev6HR.pdf)

Good point!

Some of the stuff produced by university reps reads as if produced by AI, or as scripted by a professional marketing team. But at least Leicester, UEA etc are proper universities.

There's two possibilities here.

Either these reps are extolling the virtues of their universities out of the goodness of their hearts (possible, but unlikely) or they're receiving some sort of compensation/remuneration for doing so. If the latter, they need to comply with consumer protection legislation etc and make it clear that their posts are, essentially, paid marketing for their institutions.

I think this is pretty important. There are a lot of impressionable individuals who use this site who can be (understandably) influenced by the views of those who purport to officially represent universities and provide guidance. At the very least, each post from these reps should be labelled to make it clear that their views are paid marketing. That would, at least, flag to users of this site that posts from these reps aren't quite as independent as they thought.

I agree, but this site is not well run, and its owners regard themselves as above the law in this and other respects (a common thing with social media businesses), so things are unlikely to change.
