Relevant Work Experience

Hi,
i’m interested in a career journalism but i’m not currently set on a degree. I’m really struggling to find relevant work experience as all the advice i’m being given is to ‘stand out’ which can only get me far. I know shadowing isn’t the only type of work experience but i’m lost on what to do this summer.
Is there anyone who did anything remotely related to humanities that can give me advice on what they did?

The best route into journalism is a degree in any academic subject and then a focussed postgrad course - City and Cardiff are the best UK Unis for MA journalism courses. If you look at the Wikipedia pages for any named journalists (BBC, newspapers etc) you will see that this is the most common route.

Get involved in student journalism and student politics at Uni - you'll get there if you want it badly enough.

It's great to hear that you know what you want to go into.

As @McGinger says, getting involved with politics and student led media initiatives is a great way to get experience.

While you are waiting to start university and looking for experience, it might be an idea to contact local magazines and news outlets to see if they have opportunities that way.

In the meantime, you could start working on articles/ reporting on things and ask friends to review your work and give you feedback.

If you cannot get in person experience, virtual experiences (I know its not the same) may be helpful.
