2024 general election: the aftermath

The results are almost in now and Labour have won a landslide three-figure majority, and Sir Keir Starmer will become prime minister.

We've seen the Tories lose the vast majority of their seats, a major collapse for the SNP, the Lib Dems obtaining a record seat total since WWII and 4 seats each for Reform and the Greens.

Tory casualties have included Jacob Rees-Mogg, Gillian Keegan, Grant Shapps, Alex Chalk, Liam Fox and, last of all, Liz Truss.

Hopefully people get what they deserve.
The results show the gap between votes and seats again.

Does anyone know if there is a spreadsheet of all the results to allow us to quickly view the votes and candidates?

The first thing that should be said is that this is British democracy in action. The outgoing Prime Minister has graciously acknowledged defeat and congratulated his successor. There will now be an immediate and dignified transition of power. How different to what happened after the last US presidential election.

But that democracy is far from perfect. Once again, we have a party gaining a huge majority on the basis of just over a third of the popular vote. It is clear that, for many voters, this election was all about punishing the Conservatives rather than an expression of enthusiasm for Labour - very different to the Blair victory of 1997. Many Conservatives simply stayed away or switched to Reform.

What is more, we have very little idea of what Labour's policies actually are or how they will govern without substantial increases in taxation or painful reductions in public spending.

I find it somewhat poetic that Liz Truss, the co-author of the Conservatives' downfall, should lose her seat. I also find it troubling that Labour lost seats in certain constituencies with a high concentration of Muslim voters. It is to be hoped that this does not herald voting on the basis of religious affiliation in future elections.

And so Sir Keir Starmer is handed the poisoned chalice. The country is beset with so many problems, its economy is so weak and its public services so depleted that serious change can only come about through radical action that will leave many voters even more dissatisfied than they were with the Conservatives.

For now, let Labour savour its achievement. I suspect the honeymoon will be brief.

The Tory voters deserted them. If you tally the votes up Labour got 34%. Tories on 24% and Reform on 14%. If the Tory voters return then they can turn things around quick. It's not like in 1997 when Blair won with a far higher Labour share of 43%. Okay you can argue there wasn't a Reform option then but this election is more a Tory loss than Labour gaining votes.

I don't envy Starmer. Labour are going to have to demonstrate they can turn things around with sound policies by the next election or face the very real prospect of a Tory comeback much like they did from 2019 till now. The country is a mess and whilst the economy shows signs of improving, the lack of investment in schools/NHS/police/social services (anything you care to name really) means I don't see how the country can afford everything all at once. So priorities will have to be drawn up and Labour needs to show real competence in government if they want another mandate in 5 years time. FWIW I hope they do it even if I suspect I will be worse off under Labour than the Tories.

This is an absolutely incredible result for Labour. In 2019 they almost went extinct, not a single person would have reasonably predicted they would turn their fortunes around in A) just 5 years, B) with a comparable majority to 1997 and C) with the Conservatives facing their worst result since their creation in 1835.

This is a completely unprecedented result and we shouldn't lose sight of how well Labour have done. Much of this result can be attributed to the collapse in the Conservative and SNP votes, but Labour would not have made it without a successful and broadly scandal-free campaign.

There were many things which could have tanked them, namely their U-turns and position on Gaza, but they held on regardless and have achieved a record breaking victory.

What this election definitely shows, however, is our need for electoral reform. No party should win 63% of seats with 34% of the vote. This election will go down in history as one of the most disproportionate, if not the most.

Depends on whether you think the european model of coalition government is better. I'd argue at present given the crap Starmer is walking into that Labour are better off having the majority to do what they want to do. Whether they do that effectively and well remains to be seen but for all our sakes I hope they do

It's a little off topic, but yes. I would rather a system which always returns coalition governments than a system where a party dominates politics with 1/3rd support. Coalitions are a mature way to handle politics and lead to more effective, long term decision making (look at Ireland, Germany, Netherlands, etc).

From hereon, I expect the Lib Dems, Reform, Greens and maybe even the Conservatives will be heavily pushing for proportional representation.
I woke up to the news that Liz lost her seat :woo:

Also 5 hours sleep is not sufficient

The result could not more clearly emphasise how utterly rigged and corrupt the FPTP system is. It's a system that serves to ensure that the ruling Establishment always remain in power regardless of how people vote (given they also control the media and thus control how people think).

Here are the results in order of HOW MANY SEATS WON (Courtesy of the FT HERE):

ElectionResults2024.jpg

We can see for example that REFORM UK are in 7th place with just 4 seats.

Now here are the same results ordered by TOTAL NUMBER OF VOTES CAST:

ElectionResults2024byTotalVotes.jpg

Here we can see that in fact REFORM UK were the 3rd highest party voted for with over 4 million votes. Yet Lib Dems who got 500,000 votes less get 71 seats in parliament whereas REFORM UK only get 4.

The SNP who only got a comparatively tiny 708,759 votes end up with 9 seats.

This is by any standards an absolute farce of democracy.

It's an absolute travesty of unjustice and totalitarian machination.

This FPTP system needs completely abolishing but naturally the Establishment who wield it to stay in power will never let us change or abolish it. Only REFORM UK would have done that and they have been purposely kept out.

If there was ever a greater example of the utter contempt this Establishment has for this country and for British people and their culture and way of life, it is seen in the despicable Sunak's very deliberate ploy of calling a quick, snap election in order to rob other opposing parties of the time they need to organise and prepare for a democratic election. This alone shows you what contempt the Establishment UNIPARTY have for the British people. They don't want you to have choice, they don't want you voting for anyone but themselves and so they will do anything to prevent you from doing so. The snap election was their way of removing democratic choice from you, and it succeeded.

How many more years will the UK people tolerate this appallingly rigged system? What will it take for them to wake up out of their media entranced slumber and see that their beloved country is beset with enemies all around who desire and intend to totally destroy it, destroy the British culture and make British people a minority in their own country?

What will now follow will be a steady Bill by Bill destruction of our freedoms and rights under the UNIPARTY sock-puppet Starmer.

Freedom of Speech will now be abolished
Blasphemy laws will now be passed
Science will legally have to give way to belief systems
The UK people will be taxed to the hilt and impoverished
The borders will be flung open, uncontrolled immigration will be unstoppable

You reap what you sow

Only the utter despair of what follows will wake some from their trance

The only silver lining of it all is that Nigel Farage will be standing up in parliament giving the UNIPARTY stooges a complete drubbing as he did in the EU Parliamnet for so many years. THAT will be wonderful to see.

While I agree that FPTP needs to be abolished, your take on Reform being something of a victim is simply pathetic. Reform was bankrolled by multi millionaires and had an entire 'news' station (GB News) dedicated to them. The election campaign was far longer than usual and you had more than enough time to win over voters.

Reform's problem is that it is full of divisive populists, extremists and delusional conspiracy theorists. That puts people off voting for you more than anything else. Reform are not in touch with the general public (see: Ukraine and Russia), despite their persistent cries of being a 'silent majority'.

"The only silver lining of it all is that Nigel Farage will be standing up in parliament giving the UNIPARTY stooges a complete drubbing as he did in the EU Parliamnet for so many years." - Bold of you to assume Farage will turn up to parliament at all. He was infamous for rarely, if ever, turning up to vote or fulfilling his commitee jobs in the European Parliament.

This election will give Farage the chance to prove he is a serious politician. He may go down in history as another George Galloway, good at rallying up an audience but bad at representing people.
The ex-Tory MP for my local constituency stood down as a MP for this election, parachuted into more safe seat somewhere else and won it
Tonight I'm struggling with the idea of there being an MP who was born in 2002!

Voters had it explained to them that voting Reform would lead to a large Labour majority. Reform voters got precisely what they knew they were voting for. Give yourselves a good pat on the back for helping to push British politics to the left.

The Lib Dems have cultivated bases of support by getting involved in local politics. So have the Greens, so have Plaid Cymru in Wales and the SNP in Scotland (granted things are going downhill for the SNP). That is where their election success comes from. Why haven't Reform put the effort in at the local level, developed a network of councillors, and supported local communities as they knew precisely how the British election system worked?

Crying victimhood after the fact doesn't work.

Just to pick a few random things

•

snp got ~30% of the scottish vote and ended up with 16% of the seats. As their name suggests, they contested scottish seats so to compare their numbers including england and wales shows an absolute farcical understanding of statistics.

•

The referendum on voting was in 2011. If farage wants another one now, will he support another EU referendum in 2029?

•

Sunak calling a snap election was a bit like johnson callng one in 2019 over brexit. Is one ok and the other not? Sunak was between a rock and a hard place over waiting as the local election results (and poll numbers) were disasterous and leadership chatter was happening. Similarly his 5 priorities hadnt really delivered at this time. Opposition parties were well aware that he could call an early election. If reform were not ready, its their problem and shows a lack of planning.

•

blasphemy laws / science giving way to belief / .... are simply nonsense.

I could go on but ....

As reform has the same number of seats as plaid cymru, I really hope theyre given the same airtime, which would be fair/democratic for the british people, a topic you seem to be passionate about. It would hardly be fair for plaid cymru if reform had more airtime.
Reading this is actually refreshing/relatable for once.

Compare the situation to France (where there isn't a PR) either and I much prefer the electoral outcome we got. At least there's a mandate to try and make things better. The french result is a complete mess and (as far as I can see) they can't call a repeat soon? You might not like the result here but it's definitely cut and dried.

I never thought I'd actually be depressed at the prospect of a Labour government, especially after the catastrophe of the Tories for the last decade. But Starmer's Labour doesn't really feel like Labour at all—it's more of a centrist neoliberal sham, or even centre-right. The Tories had lurched so far to the right that the centre was up for grabs, and grab it they did. They ousted the Left members of the party like Jeremy Corbyn and Dianne Abbot and pushed hard on this rebranding of Labour as a neoliberal party.

If this were truly a Labour party, I'd be thrilled. But as it stands, I expect disappointment. It may be an improvement on what went before, but it's far from what Labour should stand for.
