Official University of Portsmouth Clearing Advice Thread 2024

Hello everyone :h:

Welcome to the UoP clearing thread. A space full of clearing advice you’ll (hopefully) find super helpful.

We’re here monitoring daily and can’t wait to talk to you and answer any questions you might have! No question is too small or silly - this is a completely open space!

What is uni clearing?
Let's start with a little bit of info about who it's for:

Clearing is for everyone:

If you haven't applied for uni yet

You applied but didn't receive an offer

You're reconsidering options after learning your results (whether that be uni or course)

You didn't meet the conditions of your offer

How do you apply for clearing?

Do your research beforehand, and look at Universities and courses you might be interested in applying for, even if you are confident in your grades.

Make a list of phone numbers and the course names you are interested in for each University.

Create a list of useful information so you have everything on hand when you call. We have a handy list for you.

When you have your grades you can start to call Universities to see if they have spaces available.

If they do, they’ll ask you questions about yourself. This is where your list from earlier comes in handy. If they don't, they'll offer you a similar course.

If you're accepted you’ll be congratulated and they’ll give you a UCAS code at the end of the phone call.

Rinse and repeat for all of your University/course choices.

You’ve done it! Congratulations! Choose one and confirm your place.

You can hold as many offers as you want, but you can only confirm one. You have 24 hours to make your decision before the space you were offered is opened again to someone else, so don’t rush into it!

If you applied through UCAS previously, you can accept your clearing offer in your UCAS hub. You just need to go to the ‘Your Choices’ section and ‘Add Clearing Choice’ and enter the details of the course.

If you didn’t apply through UCAS previously, then follow the link in your email confirmation and complete our online Record of Prior Acceptance Form.

For even more information we’ve put together an online guide to help you through the application process.

How long does clearing take?
This is quite difficult to answer as it depends on a few different factors; if you hold a current offer at a University and have met their requirements you’ll need to be released by that University first before applying through clearing.

If you didn’t meet your requirements for your UCAS options you get put straight into clearing and can start to gain offers from different Universities.

There is a misconception that you have to rush to get offers - take your time and think about what Universities you’d like to call. Remember, you have 24 hours to accept your offer, so think hard about which one you want to take and don’t be pressured to rush into it.

How to contact us?
If you already have your results you can apply now in 3 different ways.

Call us on 023 9284 8084 📞

Talk to us on live chat (in the bottom left-hand corner of the page) 💻

Apply directly using our online form. 📝

If you’re still waiting on your results, and think you might need to go through clearing, you can get ahead and become a VIP with our priority clearing service 😎

Clearing visit days
Because you’re applying through clearing you might not have had the chance to come and visit us yet. Come and meet us on the 8th of August to get a real feel for the Uni.
You can reserve your space here.

Accommodation
If you apply for a course through Clearing, you'll be offered a guaranteed room in halls if you accept your course offer within 24 hours of receiving it and apply for accommodation as a new full-time undergraduate student by 5pm on 21st August 2024.

If you have any questions about our accommodation, ask them below or check our webpage which will be updated frequently with the latest information.

Connected degrees
If you haven’t heard of a connected degree it’s because we’re the only university to offer them. They allow you to have a paid placement in your third OR fourth year - it’s completely up to you!

If you don’t feel ready to do a placement year in the third year which is what traditionally happens or if you want to stay with your friends until graduation then you can with a fourth-year placement instead.

Finally…

We want to wish you the best of luck with your results and we know it’s easier said than done but please try not to worry if you didn’t get the outcome you wanted - it’s only the start of your journey.

We'll post the courses available in clearing below soon, so watch out for those.

We’re here in the comments if you want to talk or ask any questions.

Hello! I really want to go to Portsmouth (rather than my insurance university) through clearing. However, the grades for my course is BBB. I know it is dependent on how many people are on my course etc but I was wondering how high my chances were of getting a place at Portsmouth if I get below the grades that I need. Normally my course at Portsmouth would let you in if you drop a couple of grades- however- I think this is probably different for me as I have not even applied yet (and am planning on applying through clearing). Thanks!😃

Hi!

I've got all my fingers and toes crossed for you that you do well in your exams 🤞🤞

What's the course that you're interested in? I can't say for certain you'll be accepted but I can take a look for you/ask our admissions team. Grades tend to drop in clearing even for new applicants but it's not always the case and as you mentioned above is course dependent!

Hello,

So they've just echoed what I've said above. They have confirmed that they do expect the course to be open in clearing, so give us a ring when you get your results! They'll then be able to tell you if you've met the entry requirements and hopefully offer you a place! 🤞

Again, I wish you all the best! Whatever your results, you should be super proud of yourself.

Hi I hope you are doing well,

Every accommodation that the university works with in the city has a single bedroom for every student living in halls so you will have your own space to sleep and to call your own.

A lot of the accommodations have an en-suite inside those bedrooms so you will have your own personal toilet, shower, and sink. It is also typical for them to have a shared kitchen which you will share with several other people.

Rees Hall is a catered accommodation so you have your own bedroom and en suite and then there is a Kitchen / pantry on each floor. There is a big dining area on the ground floor where meals are provided twice a day. You have your own room you don't share a flat space with anyone else.

Burrell House is also a catered accommodation with a shared bathroom on each floor. You have your own room you don't share a flat space with anyone else.

Bateson is single rooms, self catered flats, with a shared bathroom on each corridor.

All the other accommodations in the city centre (Catherine House, Trafalgar Hall, Greetham Street, Harry Law, Margaret Rule, Chaucer House, Rosalind Franklin) are en-suite bedrooms with a shared kitchen area so you will have your own cluster of bedrooms with a shared space, all self-catered.

A lot of these options also have studio flats where you will have your own en-suite bedroom and kitchenette area but you don't share that with anyone else so that is entirely your own space.

En-suites, catered halls, own kitchen areas, and other things like that will all obviously adjust the price of each hall. I have attached a link below to all of our halls so that you can check them out for yourself.

Let me know if you have any further questions,

All the best,
Daniel

Hey! Great question - do you mean access to your own kitchen not shared with anyone else?

If yes, you want to look for a studio flat, most of them do studio flats but they are a little more expensive - I'd look at Catherine House, Chaucer, Greetham Street, Margaret Rule Hall, Rosalind Franklin and Trafalgar.

If you just want your own bedroom, and bathroom but are ok with a shared kitchen then I'd also look at the above ones and add on Harry Law - it will be slightly cheaper to share a kitchen!

You might need to contact some of them directly for a studio flat.

Hope that helps!
