Hi,
I am a 3rd year Biomedical sciences student and hopefully can provide some insight here. Generally, your contact hours are categorised into lab work, lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. In your first year its typically between 10-18 hours a week. Most contact hours will be in person, and this will be enhanced by some online delivery which will constitute a smaller proportion of these contact hours, depending on your programme of study, year of study and chosen optional units. This may be supplemented by additional activities such as a small number of online learning sessions (not live), skills development sessions, and personal tutorials.
The number of timetabled sessions on campus in later years may vary based on the options you choose, with a greater emphasis on independent learning. Final year Project and dissertation units will generally have fewer scheduled sessions to allow you time for your independent work – this may also mean the number of hours of timetabled sessions each week will vary within a year.
In first year, you tend to have a lot more general practical labs to help get you up to speed with basic techniques and practice. Following years may have specific modules which provide a practical aspect which may contribute towards some coursework. I have attached an image here of what my timetable looked like for a week in my second year. There is often a bit of time between your lectures. In first year, since I lived on campus, I remember going back to my flat to make some lunch etc. or I would go to a study space to sort my work for the next lecture etc. It should be noted that lectures can be anytime between 8:15 – 19:05 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and 8:15- 13:05 on Wednesdays.
Hope this helps and please let me know if you have any questions!
Sharon (3
rd year student)
