Verbal offer during clearing

Hi all! A bit of an avid over thinker here - I have applied via clearing to my dream university. The university sent me an email earlier on today saying they have made a verbal offer and I had to apply on UCAS for them to accept it. I’m worried they may go back on their decision, would this happen? They’re yet to respond, how long does it usually take? Many thanks )

A verbal offer like this is often based upon partial information - e.g. a conversation you had with them on the phone, or answers you've given via an on-line form.

Once you formally apply via UCAS, they get to see your full application and can, theoretically, see something in there which didn't come up earlier. So it's possible that - despite the verbal offer - you don't receive an official / formal offer. It's not likely, but it is possible.

How long has it been now since you formally applied via UCAS?

I applied this afternoon, maybe around four ish. I’m quite the over thinker with a lot of anxiety so I am extremely worried, I know I should wait a few days or so to receive confirmation but I feel my anxiety taking over!

Understood. If you only applied at about 4 o'clock on a Friday afternoon, I think you're right that it's unrealistic to expect them to have processed that application yet.

I think you need accept that you'll get little sleep over the weekend, and perhaps the early part of next week, as you stress-out waiting for them to formally respond.

During the main application process, applicants often have to wait months for a response, so I'm sure you can endure a few days!

As above, this is simply because they haven't seen your application - and unless you have told any porkies, it will turn into a formal offer on Monday, so really, stop worrying.

If you’re ever uncertain when being given a verbal offer - ask the university to send you the details by email.

“Verbal” offers are just informal/provisional offers. They can absolutely be made in writing as well as over the phone.
