Jesus vs St John’s vs Queen’s Cambridge for CompSci

Hi! I’m currently picking a college between these 3 colleges. I am quite keen on the idea of a more traditional cambridge college, but I would prioritise community, aesthetics and facilities. I would also like a college with more than enough resources and support for academics, but I’m sure all of them provide that anyways.

So far I’ve gathered…
- Jesus has nice sports facilities, accommodation and lots of green space
- I like the look of Jesus the most
- Jesus has a nice community
- Queens has a great community across different year groups with weekly meetings with DoSes.
- Queens has a bridge
- I feel Queen’s community is the strongest, but someone can prove me wrong
- St John’s has a huge amount of money to help students financially
- St John’s is more traditional
- St John’s accommodation is nice

Also for clubs and societies, if your specific college doesn’t offer it, are there societies offered for cambridge students in general?

Could anyone expand on their experience at their college to help me decide? Thank you!!

Community is made by people, the first year changes every year. There is no existence of a permanent of inherent community in a College. You are part of creating it.

Aesthetics are personal, but be aware of some of the consequences - the older the building, generally the poorer the facilities - en-suites, lifts, etc

Facilities -if there is something that is important to you - gym, book room, pianos etc, then look it up on the website, or contact the JCR and ask for specifics. There are university level equivalents though, ie sports facilities, music practice rooms etc that you can access.

There are many clubs and societies in College and the University. Generally niche interests happen at University level because that's the only point there are enough people interested from year-to-tear to make it viable. However, in College, if there isn't a society you want and you want to organise it and get others involved, generally your JCR will help you.

Be careful of wanting a 'traditional' College. Traditional often means old-fashioned and with a stronger, more influential Fellowship. It's generally Fellows that benefit from traditions, rather than students.

They are excellent options but you could consider other colleges like Selwyn, Peterhouse, Pembroke or Girton.

If you are adamant, i would suggest Queens.
