Fees for postgraduate studies

Hello,

I was wondering if I could get more clarification on postgrad fees.

I finished my undergraduate in 2018 and I got the student loan for fees, maintenance grant and the DSA allowance but have not worked since so I haven’t begun paying back due to surgeries and other personal circumstances

I’m thinking about studying my masters and the fees are 19k.

On the gov website I understood that they can provide a loan for 12k. But if my fees are 19k for tuition, how can I get support to pay them? Would I be able to get DSA for to cover my fees? Also, is there support for accommodation costs as post grad as the uni I would like to go to in far away from my parents.

Hi there,

Thanks for confirming. How long is the course and when do you intend to start? Would you be living in Scotland to complete the course? Where do you live just now?

Thanks,
Ross

1 year, not when about start date as I am unsure about fees but if funded asap, living in Scotland to complete the course and now living in Bedford, England.

With Postgraduate funding, you're only eligible for £12,471 for the full course. If the fees are higher than we can offer you, then you'd need to self fund the remainder.

Ross

Thanks for the info Ross. Is there any other financial support I can get from student finance for the remaining fees? Can DSA help or is there a maintenance loan/grant i can take out same as undergraduate?

With the DSA support I don't think you can use that for the Tuition unfortunately. There is no other Masters support unfortunately.

Thanks,
Ross

Oh no… that makes to hard for potential students to enroll on any course above what they can get a loan on.. can student finance provide advice or signpost to where I could get support for the remaining 6k for the fees?

The postgraduate masters loan is a payment for everything: fees, accommodation, living costs… the postgraduate loan typically does not cover the costs and students need to have savings &/work simultaneously.

Hi maryam555,

There is no additional funding through SFE for stand alone masters courses, just the Postgraduate Loan. It might be best speaking to the financial department at your university to discuss your options.

Thanks, Clare
