Funding after previous degrees

Hi guys!

I have completed an undergraduate degree, graduating in 2020. I then began my Masters at the same University, but soon dropped out due to Covid and mental health related reasons. I attended only one lecture and was required to make a payment of around 3k, which I paid immediately. Now, I have moved cities and am working as a radiographic assistant, and like many RDA's, I am really keen to do a BSc or hopefully a Masters in diagnostic radiography. When I have enquired about the Masters is says I am not eligible as I have previous Master's loan. This is understandable but I have seen some times where the nature of the degree, aka a medical degree, or the fact I dropped out so early in previous masters, can change your eligibility? In short, what are my chances of getting a BSc or Masters with my previous loans? I am aware of the process of appealing the refusal ,but just wanted to get some information before I do this. Any help will be much appreciated!! Thank you so much in advance.

Hi Alex,

It's possible to get another Masters Loan if you have Compelling Personal Reasons (CPR) for not completing your previous course.

It sounds like you may have this: for example, do you have any proof that you could provide, like anything from a doctor or lecturer?

Thanks, Graeme
If it is a pre-registration masters course in Diagnostic Radiography (DR) that attracts undergraduate funding, is it not an exception course? Or would only the BSc in DR be an exception?

Yes, so those courses are classed as Postgraduate Healthcare, which are normally exceptions. They also attract undergraduate funding, so you'll be applying for the Tuition Fee and Maintenance Loans.

Do you know when you plan to start studying?

Thanks, Graeme

Hi Graeme and Norma, thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it- you have given me some much needed hope!

Firstly, the course I hope to pursue (Diagnostic Radiography MSc) says it is pre-registration. I also was hoping to start this Sept 2024, but as of recently the course is now full! So will have to be next Sept now unfortunately.

Also, I have medical records of taking mental health related medication and starting therapy at the time. Would this be enough to suffice? I do not think I have access to my old uni email anymore.

Thank you so much.

Hi Alex,

Can you please advise me of the full name of the course and university you intend to study at? It will most likely be funded by Undergraduate which means it's an exception course as it's an Allied Health Profession (AHP) course.

Thanks,
Ross

Hi Ross,

It would be Diagnostic Radiography MSc (pre-registration) at University of Brighton. Starting in Sept 2025 now.

Thank you!

Hi alexflanagan,

Thank you for confirming.

That course is an exception to previous study and equal level qualification rules as it is an Allied Health Professional course, therefore if you meet all other eligibility criteria, then you should be entitled to full funding for that course.

Thanks, Clare
