Most important things in accommodation

As you begin your academic adventure into university, it will be difficult to determine what items you should pack and bring with you into your accommodation. To help you get started, here are my top tips and lists of everything you should consider bringing to your university accommodation.

Most accommodations are already set with the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom essentials such as a mattress, desk, and kettle. But to make your bedroom feel more like a home, I suggest you bring items that show off your personality such as photo frames and mementos that remind you of home. Bedsheets, rugs, and cushions are also a great idea to give your room that personal splash of colour (however, if you’re an international student you might want to consider buying these items when you arrive). In terms of clothes, I recommend only bringing your must-haves and favourites as you will eventually accumulate yourself an entire wardrobe throughout your time in university. Just be sure you’ve packed for the upcoming seasons.

For your bathroom you’ll obviously need your toiletries such as your soaps, toothbrush and toothpaste. But don’t forget items such as toilet cleaners, toilet brush, towels and a robe and slippers if you’re sharing bathrooms. A stash of medicine such as ointments, bandaids and paracetamols are a good shout too!

In the kitchen, the essential kitchenware you’ll need are a few mugs, glasses, cutlery, bowls and plates. Cookware such as pans, chopping board, knives and scissors. Some extras you could consider are cling film, sandwich bags, tea towels and containers (if you wish to meal prep, or pack lunch to uni).

It’s important to keep in mind that you shouldn’t pack your entire room with you, your accommodation should issue you a tenancy agreement which lists out facilities and item(s) that are provided. If you’re an international student, remember that lots of household items can be purchased when you arrive, stop yourself from overpacking - my ‘international student must-haves’ were food items and mementos such as photos.
