A levels

I have done a previous post about how I want to do veterinary medicine and need to do bio and chem a level, however I don't think I got the grades to do it l. Can anyone give any tips to help convince my sixth form as I probably got a 5 or 6 if I'm lucky. For more context look at the previous post

Hi,
I don't think you can convince your sixth form to accept you for that subject if you don't meet the requirements. It's highly unlikely that they will let you or change the requirements just for you. Have you considered changing your career path?

Write an email to your sixth form and say that you think you might be down a bit on your grades but you’re going to be working really hard on content over the summer and you’re determined to improve drastically by September. If you’re not willing to actually do that then there’s no point, you’ll struggle too much on the courses. Also maybe do some extra stuff like online courses or events relating to chem and bio as well as the work experience you mentioned to really show your enthusiasm! I know this all might not work because if you miss the grade then they might just say no and they can do that because entry requirements are there to make sure that you can handle the course content. What are the entry requirements for the a levels you want to do? How far off are you? (Essentially asking for what grades you need to get vs what you think you’ll get). Also as I mentioned before: are there any animal care related vocational courses in your area? I really hope you can get this sorted because you sound so passionate about your goal! I hope this helps a little, have a lovely day

Hi, thanks for replying. That's sounds like a good idea so I might email them. My sixth form want a 7 but In sure from unofficial markschemes online I got a 5 or if I'm lucky a 6 as they aren't that reliable but they do give a rough idea. I also don't mind retaking them while I do my a levels and I was also thinking about do some chemistry a level work at a slow pace during the holidays so I get the basics covered. I'm thinking of maybe taking zoology but it still needs chem and bio. Thanks for replying and giving me some advice, it is deeply appreciated

I want to vet med but I wasn't really sure until I did work experience. It was such a rewarding experience which solidified my choice to be a vet. I didn't really have much motivation doing my GCSEs since i didn't know what my passion was and what I was aiming to do and I was also suffering through panic attacks regularly. And I'm not asking them to change the requirements for me as I want them to let me take the firstly term mocks which will prove to them that I can do it. Animals have been something I have been passionate about from a very young age so I can't see myself doing anything else

No zoology course requires chemistry for entry in the uk (there’s literally one which requires it for advanced entry to basically skip a year of content). They usually want biology and another stem subject: maths, physics, chem, environmental science, computing, geology, geography, psychology. Although sometimes 2 from maths, chem, physics, biology are preferred but there are lots of options if you took for example biology and geography. Im also wanting to go into zoology and am taking biology, maths and physics- i hated gcse chem and there’s no chance of me doing it for a level. I know zoology is your back up option but if your goal is to help animals then it might be a good fall-back or a way to get into the field. What third subject were you considering? Are you more likely to pass biology as this is needed for zoology and most courses for the career you’re interested in? Would you consider something like environmental science?
Hope this helps a little, remember grade boundaries might be nice you could have done so much better than you expect! Have a nice day

Thanks for the advice. Zoology was always going to be a backup as its more about animals behaviours and no offence but environmental science sounds so boring. Either way I'm going to have to convince my sixth form to let me do at least one science if not two

No offence taken, I didn’t like the look of ES either- too much geography and chem for me! Good luck with your sixth form convincing mission!

I got a 6 in gcse biology and gcse chemistry and got overall A*A*A which included an A* in a level Chem and an A in a level bio.

Some vet schools don’t look at gcses like Cambridge and Bristol so you’ll be fine if you work hard.

Ummm in terms of trying to convince your sixth form you could ask to be put on a trial for these subjects and if you don’t do well in the first test(s) you would drop them/it. Also, explain to them your ambition to become a vet and explain how you will work very hard to achieve top grades as you need top grades to become a vet. If they just won’t allow you, switch sixth forms as most allow you to take a subject with a grade 6 at gcse.

Sorry, this has so many grammatical mistakes but I’m hungover
