A level Greek

I would like to do Classics: Greek for a level and I'd have a good understanding of the language because I am a fluent Greek speaker. Of course, I know that ancient greek and greek langauge are not the same at all and just have some similarities. However, would I need to do Ancient Greek GCSE to take it for A levels to understand what i would be doing.

It would be worth you talking to the school/college at which you'd be studying to see if they would be starting the A-level programme on the basis of you knowing no ancient greek at all, or whether they'd expect you to have mastered the GCSE syllabus before you start the A-level.

You could try the previous papers at (for example) https://www.ocr.org.uk/qualifications/gcse/classical-greek-j292-from-2016/assessment/ and see if you understand them.

I did GCSE Classical Greek in two years in the sixth-form at school, and found it hard work.

Be aware that the way English people read classical Greek aloud bears little resemblance to the way Greeks speak modern Greek.

I don’t think you would need any GCSE knowledge just because I don’t know any people that have ever done it at GCSE. It’s definitely very rare even at A-Level.

Id double check with the 6th form or college and see what they say. Or you could check their prospectus or their website. They usually say the requirements for each a-level course.
But i cant imagine you having to have done it at GCSE. Its not a very common subject to be honest and i havent heard of anyone whos done it. Theres quite a few a-level subjects where you dont need to have done it at gcse. Some just require a C (or whatever number it is now) or above in english.
