Hills Road Catchment Area???

Hi Guys,

I want to go to either Hills Road Cambridge or the Cambridge Maths School. I'm in Yr10, so I've been to an open day for Hills and I'm looking to apply there this winter.

Running my predicted grades through the Admissions Score calculator for hills (2x English /9 + 2x Maths /9 + 6 best other GCSEs /9), I've got a score of 90.

I want to take Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths, which needs a recommended of 78.

As far as grades are concerned, I’m fine, however I live in Letchworth, about 45 minutes out of Cambridge at the best of times. I’d probably take the train in though, as that’s what I’m more used to.

So the main problem seems to be the catchment area, which I can’t find online.

Does anyone have any advice / tips / know anything that could help?

Read the admissions policy

Over-subscription says "The distance the applicant lives from the College at the point of application. This distance will be measured as the crow flies. As the distance is based on the application pattern each year, it cannot be determined in advance."
https://www.hillsroad.ac.uk/study-with-us/admissions-policy
You need to ask about historic data.

Thanks, I'll have a look. Do you know where I could find any? I'm thinking older websites.

I found the old admissions policy but actually it sounds like there isn't really a catchment area, apparently they just de-prioritise those not in the CAP thing.

Ask at an Open evening? It won't help though ...

i live in letchworth and so did my friend, i got on and he didn’t. he was talking maths etc i was taking essay based subjects. catchment area varies each year with people applying and how competitive the subjects are. maths etc is a competitive subject. your grades however are a lot higher than my friends and mine. i’d say your chances are slightly lower but not too low. you should be fine

Hiya as a student who applied for this for this September. Previously hills told me the catchment area was 15 miles - this year it was around that too so take that as an estimation. Also are you in cambridgeshire? and if you attend a cap school I'm pretty sure how far you live then is irrelevant but please check their admissions policy. In cambridge maths school admissions policy they prioritise these countys but please read the one for your year and check if it's the up to date info. Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Luton, Norfolk, Peterborough, Suffolk. Based on your reply I could give more better advice.
Best of luck and hope this helps xx

I had the same problem as you. There is a high chance you won't be accepted when applying the first time. I was not. Although I reapplied after I got my GCSES and got accepted for maths, bio, chem but not physics(not enough spaces) so I am doing further maths instead. My friend who also got 9s 8s for GCSES got rejected after applying again and he picked computer science, maths and further maths. So there is like a 50/50 chance you get in but like there is still a chance but have other options just incase

I am in the same situation and am panicking cause my grades are good and reference and all that but I live far away. I don’t go to a CAP school but I went to a school right next to hills for secondary. I don’t know why, as I live 1 hour away but go to a school so close, probably won’t get in but people who go to a CAP school and live as far away as me probably will.

Are you in Yr 11 now because that's when you'd normally be applying for 6th form?? Did you apply to Cambridge Maths School?

I don't know about Hills Rd but Cambridge Maths school has a vast 'catchment area', basically Eastern England, including Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. They have current students who come from London. My son has a place and we're at least an hour away by car/train.

Hi as a current hills Road student who came from a state school and didn't go to a CAP school, hills unofficial catchment area if I remember correctly from the sheets they gave us for frequently asked questions is 1 hour away. When I applied they said around 15 miles but I don't think that applies anymore to be honest since they have changed it. But hopefully that helps to give you a vague idea

Yeah I just checked again today and when I applied it was a 12 mile radius but now they have changed to 1 hour commute ( which for me is fine) but they never stated anywhere that this change just changed it in there admissions policy!?

No worries xx
I had no clue to be frank but yes I think they do put that it can change anytime it is annoying that they didn't update the website! They gave us (yr12s) a FAQ sheet for the opening evenings which had the catchment area.
I think they might have narrowed the catchment area because there are even more people (due to population surge??) applying now (they have altered the timetable for the new school year to reflect this)

We live in Huntingdon and my sister didn’t get a place due to distance, we are much closer than you. You can apply again in August but still think you will still be too far away. Maybe try to get a scholarship at a private sixth form of your grades are that good.

The private sixth forms don’t do the a lveles I want to do cause I want to do English lang which I have only found two sixth forms that did it which are hills and abbey gate in bury
