NEA English literature

I am planning to do the Bell Jar for my NEA English work and focus it on mental health however I am stuck what to compare it to. The book has to be pre-1900s, a play or prose and not a short novella/short story.

Help would be greatly appreciated thank you!! ☺️

Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' might be an interesting comparison as it explores the ideas of madness and loosing your mind, it also looks at feigned madness depending on the interpretation!

What about the Tennant of Wildfell Hall? Measure for Measure? Jane Eyre/Wuthering Heights (depending on your exam board, I don't know if these are set texts). Even Medea by Euripides is also something I would consider, depending if the text has to be English in origin.

Hi Libz333. If you'd like to study a novel, then 'The Woman in White' (Wilkie Collins) is quite a chonker of a read, but so-o-o good! See what you think ...
