AMES cambridge Toxic?

Hi
I was going to apply to Cambridge to study AMES Chinese BA, however I'm now having 2nd thoughts having read the Cambridge Varcity article 'AMES' faculty accused of toxicity as drop out and transfer rates remain high. This is rather worrying! Can a current student please describe what studying at Cambridge for AMES Chinese is like? Thanks

Varsity is a trouble-making nonsense with the lowest possible journalistic standards. It exists simply to cause problems. Don't believe anything it says.

I had a truly traumatic experience here. As reported, the workload and academic expectations are completely unreasonable. The administration and programme structure are extremely rigid and unsupportive. Some professors even use moral manipulation and emotional gaslighting to control students. Do not enroll here unless you genuinely want to experience what it feels like to live in a madhouse.

Thanks for posting. Can I ask what language you studied and the year? How recent was your experience? Also, what subjects did you take at A level?

Hey! I'm a 4th Year MML/AMES at Cambridge at the moment - happy to answer any questions you may have! Feel free to pop me a PM, easier to get notifications that way!

Hi, my Son has just received an interview offer from Peterhouse to study AMES, Arabic. He is delighted. Thing is, as it's a subject that he hasn't studied at any level, unlike the majority of students, I am advising him to show his passion and not list. Think aloud. Allow yourself time to waffle a little but keep to the point. Be honest, think back....you are only 17 and you will not know the answers to some questions. Articulate as well as you can. There is so much on the internet, it is baffling. Is there one piece of advice that you would give? Thankyou.

A lot of the students won't have studied the languages before. Many of them will just have an interest in the cultures or literature.

Honestly the whole faculty is run by ego-tripping maniacs who think they're better than everyone else because they teach at Cambridge and can't even understand what being a decent human being is. My supervisor told me to lock up my anxiety in a box and didn't help me at all. It is indeed a very toxic environment, run on fear, petty fights, gossip, and preferential treatment.
